I was driving behind a bus today and it displayed a full size Air National Guard recruitment ad on the back. So I went to goANG.com and on the front page it displays the following picture. It’s pretty enticing if joining ANG means playing airsoft and paintball all day22 years Air National Guard Veteran here. I can attest that in my career i fired about 150 rounds to qualify in Basic, then about 150 rounds to qualify before each of 3 deployments. That's it.
My first deployment was to Iraq. We were each issued an M16A2 and 1 magazine with 10 rounds. When we arrived at Balad, we locked our rifles in the vault on our compound and were given a hand receipt. They were reissued to us to carry home and locknup in the armory at the wing.
No weapon issued for the next 2 deployments because we weren't going to a combat zone (just to an ally nation in the Middle East).
So, yeah. Your Air Force ground support troops aren't spending a lot of time learning to use and using a weapon.
