Beginners .22 pistol?

I’m probably overthinking this, but I’ve never owned a .22 pistol (besides an NAA mini) and I’d like to get one for my son to learn on. He is old enough and I trust him enough to go with a semi auto.

I guess I’m looking for something Glock ish and the rugers caught my eye. This will just be a range plinker and I don’t care about any bells and whistles, no red dot BS or any of that. Are the Rugers decent or should I look at something else?

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thank you gents!
Sorry man, I don’t have time to read all 60 responses, but I can promise you that recommendations are useless. If you are anywhere near the Providence, RI area and would like to try a half dozen or so different models send me a PM.

Until you can handle and shoot some it’s useless to try and guess. The only valid recommendation I will give you is to stay away from the Glock 44, it sucks, and I’m telling you this as a Glock fanboy.

i certainly hope your son will be with you, to help with this decision, whichever pistol it is. after all, it is going to be his, not yours, correct? i strongly feel a pistol is like a pair of shoes, it needs to fit his hand and be comfortable for him to hold. this is helpful if you want him to have any success with it. and if he's gonna be like most people, he'll probably keep this first .22 pistol for the rest of his life. instead of tossing out several recommendations at you i just wanted to toss this bit of advice at you. a dozen guns have been shouted out. while all are good choices some grip angles may not suit him and he won't be happy.

The mk IV ruger is a great choice. But I really like my Sig P322 as it's a great training gun, lighter, and helps transition to a p320 or similar as the boy grows. Mine has been reliable and not too picky with ammunition. I don't mind a few failure to fire as that promotes good habits of tap, rack, back on target etc

MKIV 22/45. By miles.
Yes. Which illustrates that even a stopped clock is right twice a day. The MK4 22/45 is one of the very few guns that Ruger got right....

But....it pisses me off that it took them 30 years to fix the take down retardation, pisses me off that they can get the trigger right in the MK but nearly everything else they make has a trigger like a rusted old Webley and it pisses me off that their guiding principle is to skinflint.
I will never own another Ruger out of principle.

I also like the idea of conventional design as opposed to a blow back pistols for a new shooter.

I'm pretty sour on Ruger's non LCR revolvers these days, but I wouldn't say their focus is on skinflinting. Their autos... I mean, they're basically all copies of either Kel Tec, Walther, FN, or most recently Glock Gen 3 and Sig P320. The one thing they tried to make on their own being the American pistol and that has gone over like a wet fart.

In a market dominated by sub $400 9's, trying to bring to market something twice the price is not economically viable.

I'm more ticked they haven't made the 57 in 7.62x25 or .22 TCM. You know, bottleneck pistol calibers that actually don't suck.

Yeah I just saw that KAG has a walther for $250. At that price I may just buy it and roll the dice.

It's not much of a roll unless you like snake eyes or box cars. Not knocking someone else's choices but .... The trigger is between awful and terrible. A friend bought one (P22Q) and asked me to try it out. I ended up using the baby fish scale on it afterwards and the pull was well over 11lbs.

Ok thanks for the heads up. Too heavy for a new shooter. I’m in no hurry as we won’t be shooting really until spring. Plenty of time to look.

I really like the GP100 I picked up some years back. Don't remember exactly when, but it's been several now. Great trigger, smooth action, and more. That and the 22/45 are the only Ruger pistols I own. I also have a 10/22 takedown though.

Both the Ruger 22LR firearms got Tandemkross items installed pretty much right away. I installed a Volquartsen competition bolt into the 10/22 after running it for a while. At some point I'll probable do more to the 10/22. I've done pretty much everything I can think of/want for the 22/45.

I've had my share of 22 pistols.

My S&W 617 is the nicest. I had a nicer K22 Masterpiece but let it go for some unknown reason.

The Ruger SR22 was garbage, the several MK series guns were all good but unnecessarily complicated to tear down and clean.

My Glock 44 has been flawless but I've only run mini mags through it and just used it for plinking.

I think if I were adding another to the mix I'd probably try the S&W Victory

S&W Victory

Inexpensive, fantastic stock trigger for the price, lots of hop-up parts available, comes with a scope rail and adjustable iron sights, comes with left and right handed target grips.
This
I have an aftermarket barrel (TacSol 6") on mine which lowers the weight and improves balance but out of the box it is still a great gun.
Eats anything you feed it.

Now I regret selling my PPQ .22 years ago. I’ll need something to teach the kids since my range allows only .22 for kids.

TX22 seems perfect if not for the roster bullshit.

Ruger MK IV pistols are very easy to split apart now. Simply rack/cock it, flip the thumb safety on, press button at the rear and rotate the upper and you're done.

1)Ruger mkII, mkIII or mkIV
2)an old colt woodsman
3)an old high standard
4)Glock 44

Since everyone really likes the Ruger Mark IV's, do you guys think the 75th anniversary model is worth getting for a first Mark?

I really have no need for another .22 pistol, this would be more just to have as one that might go up in value, but I do like the adjustable sights and the tapered barrel as to get a fully adjustable sight on Mark IV's you have to step up above the Standard models and that means about $50 more.

That's up to you. Will it go up in value? Maybe. If it's in my safe it's just another option to take to the range. I got over the whole safe queen thing and prefer to use what I have to put a smile on my face now. If you want to buy something for an investment that you can put in your hands and fondle buy silver.
I bought the Stormtrooper Mark IV and made it more Stormtrooperish with an oversized Pinty for kicks and giggles.

I have a S&W K-22 masterpiece and a German PP in 22lr. Both are exceptional options for teaching kids. My daughter is partial to the K-22. Since it's a revolver we can load it with 22 quiet rounds - you barely notice that the gun went off.

All the hate for the MK i, ii, and iii rugers......I get it.....they are hard to disassemble and reassemble. My argument for them......a MK iii cam be had for under 300 bucks......and i clean mine like once a year wether it needs it or not. 😂

They run and shoot accurately when they are dirty.....so I don't worry about the disassembly difficulty....I have the youtube instructional video saved on my phone. 😂

I don’t really care about the re-assembly pain, but I do very much dislike that you can’t change the barrel. And Ruger won’t sell spare frames. I have an early Mkiii and just want a frame with replaceable grip panels. But nope, they won’t sell it.

Yes you can occasionally/when available from places like Tandemkross & Volquarsen. They refer to them as take off Barrels because they take them off new guns that they modify then sell off the originals. Short money actually but because the barrel is the serial numbered part, it needs to be sent to an FLL. If you're wondering, any mark IV barrel will fit any mark IV frame.

That is not changing the barrel. That’s buying a new serialized gun.
