Best AK in 5.56 For The Non Poors

Right now, it seems like (and I’m sure you’ll correct me if I am wrong) the best three choices for 5.56 AKs are Arsenal SLR106 series, FB Radom Beryl and Izhmash Saiga if I can find one. Anyone disagree?

I still think the Valmet is the best 5.56 AK, but you're talking around $3k+ and over $100 per magazine.

Yeah, that’s not hard to do. M855 sucks. But luckily we’re not limited to that. M855A1, TSX/expanding solid coppers, TMK, bonded soft points, etc. lots of great 5.56 options. Even M193 has great terminal performance in soft targets. 7N6 doesn’t fragment and can ice pick through thin enough targets. M193 has very reliable fragmentation within 50-200 yards depending on barrel length.

As for hand loads, 5.56 has way more options there. The only modern bullet I’m aware of that is available to load in 5.45 brass is Hornady V-Max. But then there isn’t any brass available for 5.45 anyway. Hornady stopped selling just the brass.

I still think a SCAR, or similar, accomplishes what you’re trying to do and does it better than a 556 AK. But if you want AK aesthetics I get it.

I can’t remember if Arsenal ever converted a 5.56 Izzy. I know Fuller did some 556 rifles when he still owned Rifle Dynamics, but I’d assume they’re over-priced now that he’s moved on.

I’d add Molot VEPR in 556 to your list if you’re including rifles that aren’t fully converted. I’d still take a SAM5 or SLR106 over anything mentioned, unless I planned on buying it for collecting.

I’m looking for quality shooters, not necessarily collectors, and not PSA beaters. The equivalent of an LMT AR but yes, AK aesthetics.

Is there a chance in hell at some point we can make nice with the Russkies once their war boner is over or Putin dies and open up the trade so we can buy some of those sweet x39 tuna cans again? Obama was devilishly smart to ban the import food after realizing he couldn't ban all semi automatics. How do you stress out a people? Starve em.

I think PSA did that but I don't remember what their ammo actually costs at retail assuming they're making either caliber.

Americans will buy from dictators, despots and crooks as long as they get it cheap. Americans don't care about China, Taiwan, Israel, Ukraine, Syria, etc. All they care is cheap goods. We quit making cars, computers, appliances, phones, and until SpaceX, even stopped going to space. We buy Chinese phones, Russian oil, German cars. We make stupid videos on Chinese TikTok, and complain about lack of cheap ammo from shit countries.

See those little shiny pieces of brass that exist? Where are you going to get those without buying them? That brass isn't cheap.

What are you going to do when you're running drills and your rifle throws the $ f***ing brass in the woods? 🤣

And you can't use a catcher on an AK because it'll interfere with the charging handle.

That's just the tip of why this is a really stupid idea for most people.
