Better Be Planting This Year. 2022+ And Up MEGATHREAD

First time I've seen something like this. Plant seems to be healthy, has maters and flowers. Was pruning up a bit when I found the 'mess'.

Kinda looks like the beginning of slime mold colony. (AKA "Dog Vomit")
Slime mold showing up in Louisiana gardens
View attachment 632034

Interesting article. Not in Lousiana nor is my soil overly damp (the top 2", at least). I'll keep an eye on it and provide an update as to whether it spreads or dies off.

Mycorrhizal fungi perhaps? Good stuff btw.

That stuff is crazy. Its neither fungus, mold, bacteria, animal... it has its own classification. And can move.

Well, sh*t, now I want to put in a cam watching just this spot! Doesn't look to be an issue for the plants so I'll just keep an eye on it. There were a couple yellow leaves on this particular plant so...

Thanks all!

The article was about the slime mold being in Louisiana at the time of the article (2020), but it is not limited to that area. I'm not sure what you have, but some of its
characteristics are similar and I was offering it up as a potential cause... not a definitive ID.

Please continue to update us as you said. Sometimes being the first in an area with something "odd" can save many others... [thumbsup]
Thanks,

I was starting to think nothing was going to grow out of this plant but then I to take a double look tonight when I saw that actually I'm able to grow broccoli!

I've had no luck with the broccoli last year due to what i think are a number of reasons but im thinking of trying the sprouting broccoli next year as its supposed to be super easy

After you pick the head of broccoli the plant will produce smaller side shoots after some time. I use to think one and done, just be patient and you’ll get more.

This year we have 30 tomato plants (mostly Heirloom Varieties)
8 Hot Cherry Pepper Plants, 2 Serrano pepper plants, 4 pickling cuke plants (growing up a trellis) and the Kale from last year is thriving.

The garden is bordered with marigolds (supposed to keep the vermin away) and we have about a half dozen mammoth sunflowers growing up along the garden fence.

So how do you know when to harvest?

For some reason I never thought I was going to get anything this year besides tomatoes.

Definitely coming together now. Getting lots of peas in which my 4yo loves. He just wanders down and eats them from time to time. Have also been getting 1-2 cukes a day. My 2yo loves to find those. And my 4yo also ate one of those whole while hanging out in the garden yesterday. I started those cukes way too early and was really worried about them but they seem to be taking now. Already ate one round of radishes and the second is almost ready. Tons of basil and cilantro that is already bolting, but some more planted that should be ready in a couple weeks. More lettuce and arugula than I could eat. Spinach all pulled blanched and frozen yesterday. Carrots look great. Tomatoes are huge. Peppers are starting to look good. Eggplants don’t look good but are starting to flower. Things seemed to come together just right for me so far.

Has anyone here tried growing Hops? I got a packet and it has some weird directions about putting the seeds in the fridge for 3 months in sand and then planting them outside in dirt.

Some seeds need a period of cold before they will germinate. Think dropping seeds in fall, sitting there all winter and sprouting in spring.
The fridge acts like winter.
Also it grows very fast and tall. You’re a little late.

Do you think I can still try this season in peat pods?

Short answer is no.

Long answer:

Hops normally requires 120 days to mature.
However,
Like a lot of plants it flowers based on the length of daylight.
So,
You could technically plant it and it would flower as the daylight gets less. They would be shorter and the flowers would be smaller because it didn’t get that long growing season before the diminishing light triggered the flower button.
Except
You have not even begun the 3 month winter thing…
So, no.

Next year. 😁

Looks real good man. Why no mulch?

I found you can also use the freezer for cold strat in just a few days. Didnt track germination rates but seemed to work.

I bought some straw to use as mulch but then got scared it might have some kind of chemicals on it. And since it has been so dry weeds have been almost nonexistent so I guess it just hasn’t been an issue. The drip irrigation keeps it moist under the surface but let’s it get crusty on top.

You should be worried about blight.
