With the range of bullet weights from 80 to 100 grains of assorted types, it is absolutely a varmint to deer caliber. I can think of none that is more so, more versatile, as you set up the parameters. None. It is a fast, comfortable, inherently accurate pleasure to shoot.
The cartridge is one of the most popular making various loadings available everywhere and relatively inexpensive. The popularity also means great choices of guns (Savage's do have a great rep for the money -- I like the Ruger 77 HB) and it will retain value.
