Republican lawmakers have introduced legislation to make North Carolina the 30th constitutional carry state in the union.

The Daily Tar Heel reported that both bills–HB 5 and SB 50–“would allow U.S. citizens with no felonies and no mental illness-related charges, over the age of 18, to conceal carry a weapon.”

The House bill also contains language that would “allow elected officials to conceal carry weapons in legislative buildings and offices in Raleigh.”

It is interesting to note that at least one NC state Senator who opposed constitutional carry during the 2023-24 session is a sponsor on the carry legislation now.

South Carolina became the 29th constitutional carry state on March 7, 2024, just two days after Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA) signed legislation making Louisiana the 28th constitutional carry state.

The other 27 constitutional carry states are Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

I hear Massachusetts is going to be #31. [rofl]

A year or two ago they got rid of the silly pistol permit. Back then you could legally own a pistol, but not buy one, unless you had a pistol permit or CCW permit. The pistol permits were "may issue" but in practice typically "shall-issue." Now it's cash and carry for handguns and--gasp!--nothing bad happened. The sheriff's association was wringing their hands and wailing about the pandemonium that would occur if people had this freedom returned to them. BTW it was a Jim-crow law.

I was just thinking about this yesterday and wondering when it would happen here...NC CCW permit is still nice cause you bypass the NICS check.
Just bypass the NC pistol permit, which is gone anyway. Last pistol I bought had to do the NICS.

Eta: Think I’m mistaken about this. Shop uses the e kiosk so I think they run all purchases regardless of whether buyer has a permit or not. Recently found out owner is kind of a dick too. Unfortunate because there’s not much else close by.

I don't know what the actual law is lol.
Last pistol purchase I showed ccp and then filled out e-4473 at kiosk. Transaction took normal amount of time, don't know if the 4473 went to NICS or just for record purposes.
When buying my 1301 the other day, filled out paper 4473/showed ccp, but docs never left counter before I paid and left.

If you have the NC concealed carry permit it lets you skip the NICS check. Still have to do the 4473. For some reason in MA it took like 45 minutes or an hour for my NICS check to go through. It did it for the first two guns I bought there, then the third and last was a normal amount of time.

With a ccw you can open carry, and I see it frequently here. I'll need to research the bill. Just thought it odd to see only concealed mentioned in this thread
I saw it frequently when my daughter lived up by Lake Norman. I concealed there all the time when in her area. I think they were reciprocal with MA at the time or something or maybe I didn't care. Now she's in SC its Con Carry anyway.

NC acknowledges valid permits from other states, even if other state doesn’t honor reciprocity like MA.

Thought so.........loaded gun in glovebox was standard fare down there, because we used to go into SC a lot too and that was the only thing allowed there for out of staters until they signed CC.

Loaded gun in unlocked glovebox requires ccp in NC.
Loaded gun in plain view on seat or dash does not require permit.
At least that’s what I remember from my class.
