Gun and Sport North in Lawrence.Mass.

Wasn't he working on moving?

Not that I've heard. I'll have to ask him.

The area is a little ruff, I parked in back of the shop and found know problem.

Yeah, the area is rather funny - sort of upper-lower-class, if you know what I mean. But even though it's a poor city, the down-town area has that lively, active feel that you get in places that are poor but have still not become really run-down. There's a strong sense of a kind of bodega-centered culture there that, even though the place is thoroughly Hispanic, is not unfriendly. I find the area welcoming, but maybe that's just because I'm very familiar with it.

As you mentioned, parking in the rear is the way to go. Lots more privacy than out front.

I took my safety course with Rob. Rob is a very nice guy, at first quiet, but then loosens up and talks to you like hes known you for years. Respectively, his shop is a bit small, but its a family business that he had gotten into and he works there alone. He works a lot of hours/week.

After I received my CCW license I returned to Rob and purchased my first gun, a S&W Sigma 9mm. He really helped me out and didn't pressure me into any sale, and made sure I had everything I needed to be set for my first purchase.

Overall, Rob is a great person to buy from. Although his prices are a little higher than some, he is trying to support his family. He works very hard and is very helpful, best of all, he doesn't try to get you to buy more than you need.

Shop grade: B+

I just happened back by this thread and realized that you folks might like to know that the Gun & Sport North used guns list is now being frequently updated (it'd be nice if the type was a little bigger though!).

I work with the guy who is doing his website. I will let him know that the font could be bigger, I just checked it out also.

Please pass along my thanks, too. I don't mind the font either way, but I've always loved his somewhat offbeat selection of used hardware and I was really happy when I noticed the list getting updated regularly again a few weeks ago.

I found the owner (only guy I've seen there, anyway) wasn't ever particularly outgoing, but when I asked a question about something I got a ton of solid information back. The neighborhood seemed a bit lowbrow but not horrendous. I'll happily go back next time I'm up that way.

Today I just happened to look at a job in the rooming house next door to Gun & Sports North. The job was a waste of time, but I was happy to see the guns sign and stopped in after my appointment. The owner was extremely nice and very helpful. I bought 2 boxes of .22-250 ammo for $14.95 per box. It is a small store, but it had a good feeling about it. I will definitely check it out again when I am in the area.

Certainly not a charming neighborhood, but not all that bad either.

I just checked the used guns list and the font size has been increased, and it's a wonderful improvement! Much easier to read quickly!

A big thanks to the person running the website, as well as to you for relaying the message!

Thanks for the kind words....I will be trying to keep the site as up-to-date as possible. also, I'll be rolling out a new .NET powered site soon that should make navigation and updating the page much, much easier. Now a word from our sponsor...

The store is in a tough neighborhood, but then again it is downtown Lawrence; which like other big cities has it's problems. I've been going there for several years and have never had a problem. I park out back, granted there are only 4 or 5 spots out there, but it's better than being parked on Broadway itself....The owner, Robert, is looking to move to a new location in Salem NH that will offer much more parking, and will alleviate the need to carry when you come to visit. Please check the site often, I'll be doing my best to update it once a week....

Thanks

I have been to this place many times, I only live a few miles from the place in the next town over. The location should not scare anyone away, yes its not the nicest area in the state, but it is by no means a guaranteed mugging waiting to happen. The store itself is kinda small, but the staff is friendly and they have the regulars that hang out with a cup of coffee on the weekend. Don't be offended if you walk in and the staff is in deep conversation with the regulars. If you just ask or look remotely lost you will receive quick attention without attitude. Their ammo prices are not the best but are on par with places like AG in lowell. They do however have pretty good pricing on most guns and are actually helpful when you ask about something that they don't have in stock. Good local source for Benchmade knives too

Been there a few times and can also say that the proprietor was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable; he will not jump right on you like the high pressure sales at some shops but definitely will talk and try to be helpful if you look like you have a question or ask. It is in a 'busy' part of Lawrence but I would not let that scare anyone away, as it is main thoroughfare, generally well patrolled by PD and easy to get a parking spot within a block or two. I grew up in New York City so feel comfortable there in that type of environment, can understand though why some may not. After 10 years in LE in rural NH, believe you are at just as much risk and threat level riding down a scenic country road in New England.
As a side note, there is a tiny little coffee shop a few blocks south on the same side of the street that has pretty good coffee.

There is a small parking lot directly in back of the shop, accessed via a gravel cowpath that runs behind the storefronts on that block. The condition of the road is starting to rival that of Zero Hour's (not really, but it's pretty rough [grin]).

At the very busiest times it will sometimes be full, but I am almost always able to find a place.

It certainly beats parallel parking on Broadway, and affords much more privacy.

I bought a Springfield Arms M6 Scout there at a real good price. I have also got several other handguns there, some old odd firearms can sometimes be had. It semes no body in lawrance gets up before noon time,I worked in Lawrance for six years,so get there in the morning ,no traffic, plenty of parking.

A friend of mine was in Salem, NH last week and said he saw a sign that Gun and Sport North was opening soon up there.

Any word on this?

he's been working on this for a year, zoning issues I believe.
When I bought my MP15 in Nov. he said the move was 'with the lawyers'...so maybe he's close now.

Gun & Sport North moving north

I was in Friday. He bought the building, and it is being renovated now. He plans to move in June. All the licenses are in place.

nice location

saw the sight for the new store nice bigger more parking
drop into the mass. store he still has a lot of stock black guns, and ammo, i guess he is going to add more lines of guns & expand the ammo he carries now. he has a big job to move all that stuff. he is trying to get an office in the next town over , methuen closer to the new store, so he can still sell to us Ma. people.

Just curious, do you own this store, work there, related to the owner or just a big fan?
You have 7 posts here and they're all about how good this place is.

I can't say enough good things about Rob at Gun and Sport North. If it weren't for his kindness and his friend Brians kindness I probably wouldn't be as knowledgeable or as active a shooter as I am. I tend to be in that shop at least once every week or so - sometimes just to stop in and visit. He gets 95% of my business and I usually can't find a better price elsewhere anyway. As others have said if you walk in a feel out of place because there are some regulars there or its just a small shop in an off neighborhood - speak up you will feel welcome. The first gun I bought I bought there years ago. I was nervous because of the neighborhood and I asked for an escort back to my vehicle as I didn't want to get robbed of my new gun(in a case that screamed gun). He told me to park out back and when I left he walk out to my truck(even though I released later I was just being over cautious) with out complaining or judging.

In my opinion Rob Kalil Owner of Gun and Sport North is one of the best assets to the shooting community with 100 Miles of Boston.
