Yeah, the area is rather funny - sort of upper-lower-class, if you know what I mean. But even though it's a poor city, the down-town area has that lively, active feel that you get in places that are poor but have still not become really run-down. I find the area welcoming, but maybe that's just because I'm very familiar with it.
As you mentioned, parking in the rear is the way to go. Lots more privacy than out front.
