All U.S. bayonets are marked with the maker and date of manufacture. There are reproductions being made of the long (16 inch blade) M1905 and shorter M1 bayonets (10 inch blade). The long M1905 bayonets had wood grips, WW2 production M1905 and M1s had black ribbed plastic grips and a grey Parkerized finish.I know nothing about bayonets. The one for my M1 is long. Does that mean it's from WWII? I think the blade is about 10".
My neighbor had a pile of junk on his basement floor and in this pile was a Japanese sword and a bayonet. The bayonet was for a type 99 Arisaka which I have. He sold it to me for 25 bucks and gave the sword to my son. It turns out the sword was made by a well known swordsmith who lived in Hiroshima. I have no idea what happened to him after the bomb was dropped.
Thank you for the shout out! If anybody has any requests for bayonets please feel free to send me a PM. I probably have about 60 in hand and are pricing them generally 20% under eBay prices. Helping a family friend sell off her late husbands collection. I have both US and foreign that were mostly bought in the 1980s. Also have a few M3 fighting knives. For anyone out there looking for bayonets I've run into @moparmatt383 who has a slew of surplus bayos for sale. I've picked up some really nice ones from him. So far I've picked up a 1917, 1942, Krag and K98K from him. The 1942 still had the grease on it.
Somwhere I have the baby bayo for one of the M1 Carbines, but it is packed away in a box someplace.More and more I've been going down the rabbit hole of Bayonets. Doing some reading and research there just as much or more to know about Bayos then there is to know about the firearms they go with. I've slowly been picking up Bayos for some of my surplus rifles. So far I've got period correct Bayos for my Arisaka 99, Enfield No 4 Mk1 and SMLE, M1 Garand and Carbine and will be picking up a nice example for my K98 this weekend from a fellow NESer.
Just looking at the options for the Arisaka, there are 4 different options you could go with depending on year and how far up the ranks you were in the Japanese military. The same for the K98. There are a TON of different Bayos out there from the mass produced to the works of art done by some German manufacturers. Significant price change as well if you have a matching number scabbard with the Bayo. You look at the Bayo for the Enfield and some of them are as big as a saber. It's like carrying a sword on the end of your rifle. Fun stuff.
Anyone else down this rabbit hole. What have you found so far?
