New SBR build

Can you SBR a pistol frame? I've long forgotten. LOL. I have this niggling thought in the back of my head that you HAVE to start with a rifle frame, but I can't telll you why.

Maybe I'm mixing up the "a pistol can become a rifle but a rifle can't become a pistol" silliness.

Yes, you can SBR a pistol/pistol frame.

And with a pistol, if there is a brace option, you could switch to a brace in order to travel with it out of state without asking for the king’s permission. Then put the stock back on in your home state.

The SP5 is also a pistol so that must be wrong? But another question I’m thinking about is does an sbr in Ma still have to follow the feature test unless it was possessed on 08/1 and grandfathered. Or does the pistol aspect change that?

That’s a complex one. They did not change the definition of rifle, so a rifle still has to be equal to or greater than a 16” barrel. And they did not create a definition for pistol. So the feature restrictions for semi-automatic rifles may not apply to SBRs. But who knows if the semi-automatic pistol feature restrictions apply to SBRs, because they don’t have a definition for pistols.

And the AWB no longer potentially relies on federal USC, and its definitions.

If the SBR falls under the new copy/duplicate language (which includes its receiver), then the question is moot. But if it is not a copy/duplicate, then that is certainly a gray question.

Yes you can. I.e., SBR a glock 19 frame and put a stock on it. If you take the stock off it magically becomes a pistol again! You can also remove it from the NFA registry if you were so inclined, just have to write the AFT a letter.
