Don't want to derail too much, but I just got my first 1911 as well (SR1911), what is the purpose of the half-cocked position?

Don't want to derail too much, but I just got my first 1911 as well (SR1911), what is the purpose of the half-cocked position?
If the sear nose breaks and/or the hammer falls without the trigger being pulled, the half cock will stop the hammer from hitting the firing pin. but you don't want to rest the sear on the half cock, its a fail safe, not a rest position

That thing was taking a beating, all marked up. really liked the burnt bronze look coming from Lou. Had reservations but I bit the bullet. Can't wait to see it in person and rip a few through it.

Sorry for the rushed pictures. I figured they would have came out better outside but I guessed I was wrong. Burnt Bronze & Armorers Black Cerakote. Here is a better picture of the color
From what I know they are made by Hogue for the SIG 1911. They say SIG Sauer on them.
EDIT: They are Hogue Extreme Series Magrip grips. The ones I have are Piranha, but from Hogue for SIG. Hogue's site has a bunch of different types and colors.
