Recommendations for Tactical / Home Defense 12 ga Shotgun Ammo?

Dick Cheney couldn’t kill a pussified septuagenarian lawyer by shooting him in the face with birdshot, I’m not gonna use that crap for home defense.
Cheney was using a 28-gauge Perazzi instead of a 12-gauge and Whittington was a reported 30-40 yards away. That's not really comparable to a home defense situation. Pretty gun, but if I'm going to pay 25 large for a firearm, it's either going to be full auto or come in a turret.

Decent size house on 2 acres, out in a fringe area with a couple thousand acres out the back door. Historically very low crime but lately brazen criminals seem to be showing up. Couple of expensive vehicles were stolen including one two doors away. Chased off a sketchy person who showed up with an unmarked van and seemed surprised when i answered the door. Said he was friends with the previous owner. I bought the house new LOL. Coyotes and bears up to ~450 lbs will occasionally show up at the house.

Bird shot for this? No thank you. Maybe ok for others with a different situation.

So far the bears and sketchy people have all left immediately when asked. Some of the coyotes needed some aggressive shoo-ing to convince them to leave. I plan to continue to "use my words" but I think the contingency plan should be there.
In this scenario, I would not use even Buckshot
300 grn slug

It sounds like over penetration and hitting unintended targets is not a concern. I use a .45 pistol and a big dog but if I was forced to use a shotgun, it would be a 12 ga loaded with #4 buck.
That's normal mode for me, on both counts. I do keep a 10mm in a fast access safe. Tactical shotgun was a B-day present and that's what prompted me to ask the ammo question.

Would be nice to live the rest of my life and never need to tap into such a contingency plan and there's a high probability I will. Mentioned this before, but my first night in my first apartment was 'interesting'. Forced entry by 3 jackasses late at night. By Missouri law I had the legal right to drop all three but a 6" 686 made a big enough impression that they chose wisely to stop in their tracks and retreat.

Federal Flitecontrol 00 and it's not even close really. Accept no substitute.

Absolutely, positively no birdshot or slugs.

Whatever you get, you MUST pattern it at the range.
This!
I ran through a Shotgun Defense Class. We pattered about a dozen different loads. Some were better in one gun than another. But clearly Flitecontrol was best because of the special wad. Most other Buckshot would throw a flyer pretty far out from the rest of the shot.

Anyone load your home defense shotgun with less lethal bean bag or rubber ball first? 10 shell tube = rubber ball X2, 00BK X4 and slug X4

Yes. First shell is less lethal. Then #4 buck. That's because I have three young men in my house who have young men friends and sometimes they don't always demonstrate the best judgement. Friends come over super late and no one thinks to mention it to me. So better safe than sorry.

That’s one way to tell them to keep the noise down!

Blam!!! Stfu! Don’t make me ask twice!!!

My DP-12 is loaded with 00BK on one tube, slug on the other. One pump, two trigger pulls gives you best of both worlds.

Typically they are staced 3x3 so not sure why the 9th would be a flyer. Thanks for the explanation though!

Not sure why either, but it's a thing.

There's a video I remember seeing that showed how nine pellet buck was stacked (three stacks of three pellets) compared to eight pellet buck (four stacks of two).

They went on to explain that forcing three pellets into the bore vice two is what made the difference.

Can't remember who did the video, but if I run across it again I'll post it up.

The 'flyer' phenomenon. Isn't the furthest impact from the visualized center of the group considered the flier, regardless of point of aim?
