Can cops own silencers in MA - is there a cop carve out? I've seen patrol rifles with silencers on them like this but never an assault weapon with one.

No. Officers cannot own suppressors in MA. They can possess them if issued by their department.

In MA suppressors can be owned by government entities and 07 FFLs. They can be possessed by government employees issued them by their department and by 07 FFLs.

In practice PDs own them and officers possess them. 07s own them and 07s possess them.

Please stop using the term “assault weapon”. This is a loaded political term of the anti gun left. I see a modern sporting rifle pictured in your post. Or maybe just an AR15. I don’t see an “assault weapon”

Modern sporting rifle is almost as dishonest of a term as assault rifle. It’s just used by the opposite side. That rifle design was not intended for supporting, nor does it need to be. The 2A wasn’t written to protect sporting.

Cops can have them issued to them by the department, but can't buy/own on tcarbine. Probably uncommon aside from specialized units like SWAT teams and such. Knew a guy who was on the STOP team and they have them on their carbines.

I hate the MSR term. Rifle, carbine or AR-15 is fine for me.

They're both faggoty terms. Unfortunately "assault weapon" may have been started by the industry as well but they stopped pretty fast, antis ran with it. I agree with you though i hate the NSSF/NRA inventing shitty pandering terms that just insult people's intelligence.

Being the most popular rifle type for decades, I think sporting rifle is an apt moniker.

Plenty of people use them for hunting everything from prairie dogs, to gators, to feral hogs.
I also believe it is the most popular platform for shooting sports like 3 gun etc.

Personally, I prefer "magazine fed rifle"

A dildo is a dildo is a dildo. Even if the handle is shaped like a steering wheel. Or Maura's tits.

So cops can pretty much ignore all the Ma bullshit. How wonderful for them.
No. They are department owned rifles and suppressors. The cop may possess them in the course of his duties. If that is your complaint, then ok I’ll say it’s valid. If we don’t “need” them, why do they?

But there isn’t a loophole where the cop can buy a bunch of suppressors for his private collection. If there was, I would have done so.

I would venture a guess that they will claim that it will prevent future disability claims for loss of hearing, because LEO's may not have time to use hearing protection in the line of duty.
They also want to be as discreet as possible when ventilating your typical meat target that is off his meds. No need to scare all the sheep.

True. But it really isn’t an assault rifle, and assault weapon means nothing.

It’s just a f***ing carbine.

I agree.

I could be wrong about this but I thought I remember there being some obscure historical context for the term assault weapon, that actually existed before the political left came up with the term to mean any kind of firearm that they want to ban. Maybe stemming from some specific use case in world war 1 or 2? It didn’t apply to military arms in general. But my memory is bad and maybe that’s not a thing.

Either way, it doesn’t matter. An AR15 is not an assault weapon. I just call it a rifle. More accurately, a carbine. But I call it a rifle.

Origin of term

The term assault rifle is generally attributed to Adolf Hitler, who used the German word Sturmgewehr (which translates to "assault rifle") as the new name for the MP 43

But, if you read on, that might not be right.

The term assault rifle is defined functionally as “a select fire rifle that uses an intermediate-rifle cartridge and a detachable magazine.”

The term assault weapon is defined politically as a scary looking gun with arbitrarily chosen “features” and/or branding.

I can understand the cop having one, his hearing loss is a woman's comp claim. They're more likely to need to use their firearm while at work than the average person, and probablynot have time to put hearing protectionon, while also needing it to not interferewith their equipmentor communication.
I met a member of the WM swat team, and he kept a go bag with his gear with him at all times incase he was activated, and he had his equipment silenced and always not far.

I have always thought that that would be a legitimate course of action to overturn the suppressor nonsense. The hearing of a lot of gun owners has been damaged due to their inability to access them.
