AAC?
OTM?
AAC I think its the ammo subsidiary Palmetto State brands and makes their own ammo - maybe it's a different company but they make the ammo in South Carolina. OTM = bullet has a hole in the front.

A 1:7 twist should shoot everything 55gr and up. I like Hornady stuff. Superformance Varmint 53gr is awesome from my 1:8 twist .223 Wylde AR
A 1:7 twist will shoot 55 gr fine yeah. But you ain't popping soda cans at 100 yards with it no way.

With a 1/7 twist rate, the rifle will mostly likely favor heavier bullets as shown in this chart. (There are more detailed versions of this type of chart online, but this one gives you the idea.)

Kind of. For cheap light ammo, yes. The faster twist will accentuate imbalances in the bullet.

However, there are numerous tests showing 1:7 can shoot high quality light (even less than 55gr) bullets very precisely.

So I'm getting my first bolt action 223, buying from a fellow NESer - really looking forward to it. But I've been strictly a handgun person. Anything I should know about 223.. any brands preferred or those I should stay away from? I ordered a few boxes from TS, mostly federal flaavors, just 1 box of each to sample.
Thanks.

Start with bulk ammo and remember to have fun. Also get a targetsports ammo+ membership if you don't have one already.

When you feel like you get a good consistent trigger pull with breathing down, upgrade to a heavier round that doesn't break the bank

save your brass

PPU makes reliable ammo but their match ammo isn't very consistent in my experience. YMMV

I’ve been dying to see how that rifle does, it seems super cool. Please report back.

I agree with the above regarding AAC 77 OTM, on sale at .50c/ea, is hard to beat. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t group well, the quality varies HUGELY by lot. It’s random.

Start thinking about optics! Sweet rifle life that deserves some glass!

uhhh, you can definitely hit a soda can at 100yds with a .223 using 55gr bullets. That's roughly a 5moa tall x 2.5moa wide target.
Maybe my gun just sucks then. My 55 grain groups are wide AF. Switch to those 77 grain AAC OTMs and it tightens considerably.

Is that still the case? I knew they had inconsistency in the beginning but thought they'd improved the lot to lot consistency.

The fuuuuuuuuuuuuck???

You ever shoot a gun?

I’m not gonna go off on how this is the dumbest thing I’ve read all day like I normally do when I read something this dumb. But just between you and me; this is the dumbest thing I’ve read all day. I won’t go telling anyone else. Because I don’t want you to be embarrassed in front of everyone. But really this probably is the dumbest thing I’ve read in a week. And that’s saying a lot because I’ve had DEI training all week. And you clearly got this from someone else on the Internet who’s also never shot 55 grain bullets through a 1:7.

I’ve had two 1:7s that would have no problems shooting golf balls at that distance. And that’s not really impressive. And it’s also with my very average at best shooting ability.

Well my gun says Radical. Might do a little better if it said Geissele or better yet, Taran Tactical

I bet if you tried shooting 55s through it at 100 yards off a steady rest with a good magnified optic, you’d get acceptable results. Maybe not. But the 1:7 twist shouldn’t be a problem with those bullets in most barrels.

We haven't found that to be the case at all. Been evaluating it for at least a year now for use by our HP rifle teams (Juniors, NITM, etc), and it's been consistently MOA.

Taran Butler is a f***ing creep.

It's probably partially the gun. I wouldn't expect much from an AR that's less than $500 for the complete rifle. They're cutting corners somewhere. A good BCG and a quality barrel will run 3-400+ by itself.
