Active Shooter Situation in Lewiston Maine

I'm probably the closest (in distance) NES'er to Lewiston. It's a couple of towns over. This Card guy lived about 15 minutes away.

Lots of confusion this morning. Death numbers are 16, or 20, or 22, depending on what news channel I listen to.

Most all schools are closed.

Maine is one big small town; no idea if I know any of the victims. No names released.

Allahsnackbar: no more cracks about Mainers being inbred or lack of teeth. It's not even mildly funny.
I'm right here on the Meadow road in Topsham.

You shoot a target with body armor the same way as if no body armor. Even if your rounds don’t penetrate they will drop the target to the ground more often than not. It buys you time to slow him down and hopefully take care of business with follow up shots. Remember- you don’t necessary want him dead, just not shooting at other people/ you.

And yes- I will think twice before pulling a sidearm against a guy with a long gun. Unless I have some sort of tactical advantage / element of surprise things will go sideways very easily and not in my favor…

I don’t know about soft armor, but no, a pistol shot to hard armor likely will not “drop the target to the ground”.

Did he even own the AR? It could have been he broke one down at base and snuck it out in a bag and left the security guard on duty a KFC bucket and a bag of THC edibles.

People I've known in my past who were off duty LE would have suppressed MG's at home for a few days. It's not like there's a high level of security for small arms on bases or PD's, if someone wants to take it home and doesn't care about the consequences, it's easy apparently.

😆 No, that’s not how it works. Only way he could do that is if he were the unit armorer.

How good is the training for army reserves?

Depends on the unit. Most, utter garbage training with firearms. Some, really good and some will even pay you drill pay to attend courses.

This guy hits all the GC talking points.

White (will be a huge Maga Republican)

Veteran ( veterans have ptsd and shouldn’t have guns)

Mentally Adjudicated ( heard voices and was admitted to the flight deck last summer, didn’t say if civilian or VA hospital)

And a Firearms Instructor!!!!!

90% of the people who'd clamor for GuN cOnTroL won't care about any of that. It's enough for them that he had a wEaPoN oF WaR.

my town has not closed schools. Just saw that Sanford (3 towns over) is closed “out of an abundance of caution”.
Iirc, it took several days to find the retard that killed Deputy Cole a few years back and that guy was a junkie moron…..
I‘m a little afraid of what the D controlled state legislature might try to pull out of their asses after this one.

Right about the time that a Vet (or anyone) starts hearing voices and threatens to shoot up a NatGuard (or other) facility, it’s getting serious. WRT Involuntary Psyciatric Treatment laws, Maine falls middle of the pack with a C+ (note MA gets an F). As these are grades for patient advocacy, they reflect diligence of review and treatment. I dunno if Maine’s laws overprotected him or didn’t provide sufficient treatment. Either way, his shrink should get a poor review in HealthGrades.

”Law enforcement officials in Maine tell CNN that Card is a certified firearms instructor and a member of the US Army Reserve. Card had recently made threats to carry out a shooting at a National Guard facility in Saco, Maine, and also reported mental health issues, including hearing voices, the officials said.”

Evasion path:
Lisben boat ramp was a smart stop. Likely no one there this late in season or night, not watched, etc. But people leave vehicles in those lots all the time. It's also next to the river so "maybe boat" is on the table. And it's also right next to a set of train tracks which I don't think is in use which goes right to I295. About 4 miles along those tracks, which section has very little exposure to businesses, roads or houses and is an easy hike, there are a sequence of power line trails which lead basically halfway to anywhere in the damn state. Stash an ATV/UTV or dirt bike there, and it's clear travel right into the back of the Shell parking lot on the 196 ramp of I-295. Then head to Aroostook (likely has a camper stashed up there.)

Was super smart bypassing I-95, as that was likely the first thing locked down.

The more I'm thinking this through, counting ambulances seen (like one in any of the pictures or feeds) the bed capacity reports from the hospitals, the clarification from news media that the 50-60 injured were likely more than not NOT gunshot victims, but injuries like broken toes or cuts and bruises sustained in the panic mob... What do we know?

Notes:
1. Spare time had a kids bowling thing last night. But notice carefully that no one has mentioned at all in the news whether kids were injured or killed. I find that omission... interesting.
2. Maine Valley Pool league meets at the bar'n'grill on Wednesdays nights at the same time.

So if this nut (or cracked nut, or errant arrow off a bow string of a person) was after someone ... specific... Maybe someone took their kids out bowling instead of playing pool. I really want to know which was hit first. The bar, or the Bowling alley?

Not reacting to anyone. Just stating what I understand from people familiar with what has occurred. If politicians are going to pass laws and hold people to laws where they have clear disqualifiers then they should enforce them. If you threaten to shoot people and are recently released from a mental facility, then they should have removed his firearms. This has happened several times and everyone overlooks it and instead just blames firearm owners overall and put in more stringent laws that do nothing to stop such events.
Yeah but no one knows anything right now. He could have stole it from a relative’s house, borrowed it from a friend, etc. He can be a psychotic nut job and perfectly logical at the same time.

Hopefully they drop him soon and he stays alive enough to tell them why he did what he did. Either way he’s a nut that needs to be dealt with

Can I get the cliffs since last night? I'm not reading 300 posts of pants passing and pillow biting.

I know it was an Army vet blah blah blah. Did the cops get him?

Member of army reserve
Firearms instructor
Recently committed and released for mental health issues
Still at large

That work?

Guy shot up a bowling alley and bar.

He’s been in the wind since dropping his vehicle at a boat launch.

NES is convinced he walked the rifle off an Army base.

22 Dead 50-60 wounded. The city is locked down.

Ohh and it’s one of those “known to law enforcement” situations.

He couldn't go very far by boat. There is a dam right there up-river and another one not far down-river in Brunswick.
From the map it looks like two damns eastward.

But with a lightweight kayak he could land, walk, refloat around those pretty easily.

I’m assuming that river drains towards the sea? If so he wouldn’t have to work too hard to make good mileage

A sports bar, bar and what other building were targeted? All places one can’t legally carry to be sure. But they never say he went to those places BECAUSE he had less a chance of being stopped.
Common misconception. You can carry in bars in Maine (most other states too). Unless posted. And As long as you are not under the influence. Only 15 states have a flat ban, even Ma allows it.*** AS LONG AS NOT DRINKING***

Not at those spots. Crossed maybe. Transited? Unlikely. I'm revising my EnE.. He could have swam across the river, hooked up downstream of the powerline, made tracks on that to one of the houses for sale on Pinkham Rd (there are two) where he stashed a second car and been clear to Freeport while the helo was still trying to find the Subaru at the ramp. Or at ten other easy places downstream. Heck. A floatie and he could have coasted rather than swam to a bunch of spots along that river to cross.

The disarmament activists in Maine must be ecstatic about the coming opportunities.
  • Magazine ban
  • Semi-auto carbine ban
  • Repeal of permitless carry (just because)
There could also be some variation of requiring compulsory mental health checks for firearms instructors, wherein "firearms instructor" refers to NRA certified firearms instructors or whatever this guy is.

I’m guessing the firearms enthusiast ccw rate is above 80% today in Maine, up from the typical 2-10%.

Previously arrested for kiddie porn also.
