Truck driver that works for me. He's 24. He hasn't fueled his reefer trailer and let the tank get low.....because he lost his gate card 3 days ago......and has been waiting to tell me. I know he lost it because he told one of the other drivers he lost it and that driver told me this morning that this kids not fueling the trailers and he's gonna get f***ed and have to fuel them all today before the weekend.

Text chain with said 24 year old....

He had to drop off a loaner tractor Tuesday and left the card in the tractor.....aka.....you f***ing lost it. 🙄

I feel your pain , I deal with it daily

i get waiting for him to come to you and say something, but obviously that wasn't gonna happen.

if you knew he lost it, and he is your subordinate, you could have approached him once you were aware and then used that as an opportunity to explain to this kid that people f*** up and he should have come to you right away. Not hidden his situation from you. the way you handled it, kids never gonna trust you, or whoever else he told and then went and squealed to you.

maybe it wouldn't change anything, but my experience in your position is for me to take more control of the situation and steer the outcome how I would like
which you eventually did by telling the kid to fill his trailer, exposing the missing fuel card.
the fact that the kid argued after would drive me apeshit.

Dude.

I've been in charge of People for 30 years and do a pretty good job.

This isn't over......I'll have a chat with him when he gets back.....including telling him how his not saying anything and not fueling trailers was going to put extra work on the other drivers.

Still rather deal with them then boomers and gen X
Because its just easier to deal with people that dont' give a fxck and don't care? My guess is your the one being told what to do...not the manager.

Because if your managing them its a fxcking nightmare. Add Diversity, Inclusivity, and whatever bullshit...plus all the hurt my feelings corporate bullshit into it its almost worth it......give up and just let the customer suffer because some butthurt 25 year old can have his/her version of work life balance.

Boomers were a PIA, inflexible, work long hours, stay til late, no work/life balance.........I worked most of my career thru that bullshit.....but there was a work ethic and standards and people fxcking showed up and did their jobs. I'm not looking to repeat it, and don't want to work like a boomerfag....and realize there is a middle road that can work. However.....its gone ass up.

These younger motherf***ers its all about them and their quality of life and work/life balance. Or they are just have so much bong resin in their fxcking head they don't have common sense.

In most cases..not all...but the bad actors that don't show up or do their jobs are all 30's or less. And some of these bad actors with the boss's ear..... have had some real good people fired because they tried and hold their feet to the fire over getting things done. Good luck....cause now these a**h***s that got these people fired....were to stupid to know that they were making their jobs easier for them....and now have fxcked their inexperienced ass.

Funny. I'm in charge of 23 people. The guys 45 to 60 years old are my best guys. Period.

Have I dealt with some gen x that are tool bags....sure. but for the most part they work well and don't need their hands held.
23 people....god bless you. My best day was when stopped having direct reports! But like you....no problems with anyone 40-60...ever. Except they maybe cared too much sometimes.

Fire him

Incompetence, lazy and shitty work ethic is acceptable now because nobody does anything about it.

There is very little accountability in the workplace and you get shitty employees in return
Hes been with us for 3 months. I have to try and work with him......cdl a drivers are hard to come by these days and if I term him I'll have to use contract carriers to cover the loads at 3 times the cost.....it can take 2 months or more to hire a cdl a driver these days.

Can't.......HR won't let you I bet. My buddy went thru this constantly.

He almost ended up getting fired because he wasn't either being PC enough about it to the HR person or wasn't "understanding enough about that person's situation.

Half of these HR managers are all about this enabling shit.

I'm not in that boat with hr fortunately. My issue is really finding another cdl a driver if I term him. Hard to come by these days.

Really the heart of the problem. If there was a CDL driver around every corner....this shit wouldn't happen.

I grew up in a shitty boomerfag economy, and they could kick you in the nuts and you'd still have to come to work...because there was no alternative.

Stronger message to follow !!!!! 😁

scary when you think the guy is driving around like 30000gvw+ though... gotta be tough driving with someone holding your hands

ahh gotcha, sucks that is the situation.

I can imagine it's infuriating, hope the kid gets squared away for you soon

Nothing to do with Gen Z, or Boomers or anything like that.

They live among us.

Some of us call them NPCs but it's not at all to do with political views. Or look up "do i have an inner monologue? **"

They look like humans and even act like them for the most part. But they cannot reason or think. If any of you are into old school sci fi, remember those mindless vampire beings? Sort of like that. Flipping burgers - simple driving tasks - these are all things the simulacrums can do by rote, but without any real thinking involved. Hell, they can even breed with us. The kids have a 50/50 shot at being normal.

With our exploding population pressures, they're just too numerous to "not notice". They've been here since Adam and Eve.

** If you have an inner dialogue rather than a monologue, then you're nuts and should go get checked out.

It's been acceptable for longer than now. I dealt with this in the trucking and delivery business back in the late 90's. I wanted to fire a useless driver who misrepresented his skills and experience on his application. I found this out AFTER he took out a couple of mailboxes and did some fantastic lawn jobs with dual rear wheels. I did not play a role in the hiring process. I was told to have a senior driver train him for the job in two weeks or less. I just got the displeasure of managing the staff and taking the blame for all their faults. The senior driver said he wasn't going to cut it during his training. After the damage was done, I was told that WE can't fire him, we have nobody else that is willing to take the position. This answer came from a V.P. with zero experience in operations or the delivery business. She looked great for her age though! This philosophy resulted in the inmates running the asylum and the problems snowballed. I do not miss this b.s. one bit.

He will come around....or he won't.

My goal in the conversation later is to have him understand that you made a mistake losing the gate key to the fuel point.....shit happens.....but if he'd let me know it only takes me 24 hours to request a replacement from the fuel company......and just choosing to not fuel up just puts extra work on others.

That's how I found out....one of my other drivers noticed the fuel was low on trailers this kid had used.....and asked him why he wasn't fueling and the kid told him he didn't have his gate card anymore......son that other driver texted me this morning at 530am.

Easy solution.....I get a new card for him for Monday and he can use the penske fuel point today.....rather than just not fuel them and make others do it. Not to mention he had to be on fumes on his tractor this morning 😂 if he'd let me know Tuesday he lost the card this would be a non issue really. But the worst is the bullshit response about "I didn't lose it". Jesus christ.

But it boils down to this.....not doing your job and making others do it.....is f***ed up.
