Dealing with the gen z.......I swear some days I just want to say f*** it and head to the woods and be a hermit.

It's common for people to do their private business during working hours for remote people, some that are motivated will work 2 jobs from home.

I bump into people on the clock all the time at the laundry mat, grocery store and gym

I will laugh once the remote worker thing becomes a thing of the past because it's coming
We for sure have people that run other businesses while working from home. I probably could too....kind of do in the stock market and crypto and will make half my salary this year.

Younger folks are just not into driving rigs for a living......so the labor market for cdl a drivers is tight.
I make far under 32 an hour. I have 13 years of exempt CDL driving. Its not that I'm "not into" driving it's I don't want to deal with the CDL.

From what I understand getting a CDL has been made more annoying than it already was.

We pay 32 an hour for a cdl driver....I have to pay attention to the market pay for new england cdl drivers and adjust annually to stay at the top tier for drivers....or they will leave for better pay.....and I don't blame them.

My drivers with their overtime make about 85k a year on average.

Younger folks are just not into driving rigs for a living......so the labor market for cdl a drivers is tight.

It's hard to blame them if it pays that low. There are many other jobs that pay more for bench work that don't require as much time away or take as much of a physical toll.

i get waiting for him to come to you and say something, but obviously that wasn't gonna happen.

if you knew he lost it, and he is your subordinate, you could have approached him once you were aware and then used that as an opportunity to explain to this kid that people f*** up and he should have come to you right away. Not hidden his situation from you. the way you handled it, kids never gonna trust you, or whoever else he told and then went and squealed to you.

maybe it wouldn't change anything, but my experience in your position is for me to take more control of the situation and steer the outcome how I would like
which you eventually did by telling the kid to fill his trailer, exposing the missing fuel card.
the fact that the kid argued after would drive me apeshit.
I tell kids all the time, it's way better to approach a problem 'hat in hand', than let it hit someone important from out of left field, out of the blue.

There are very few people left that really want to work in every generation.
Every generation has exceptions to that.
Those exceptions are increasingly harder to find in the younger generations, but they are there.
It's like finding a diamond in the rough.
🤓
This isn't the early 1920's anymore where you could walk into a store wearing your own clothes and get asked to get behind the counter to start working immediately. We've come a long way and some of the standards are good, but certain jobs that need doing are made way too complicated, or rather; the process of getting hired has way too much bullshit in it for young people.

Or the jobs are fake and you’ll never hear from them…maybe a canned response 6 months from now. When you question yourself “ did I apply there” ?

32 an hour is not low. The average in mass is 28.85 an hour and I pay 32 an hour so I don't lose them. My guys average about 85k a year with OT. These are local drivers home every night lol

It's not low for the job (though your annual summary included OT) but it's low in comparison to alternative jobs. You're not competing against other CDL driving companies, you're competing against Raytheon, BAE, Lockheed, etc which will pay $85k/yr for a mid range union position doing semi-technical bench work. And they provide all the training. $60k is bare entry level for one of those jobs. I'm not terribly surprised you're having difficulty finding people, CDL driving is way more stressful than that.

It's not that nobody wants to work anymore, there are just few people who are willing to do the job you're offering for the amount you're offering to pay them.

They keep them in their wallets. A lanyard would be tough because they have to reach out the truck wondow with the card to hold it against the reader to open the cyclone fence.

8 years at this company I've never had a driver lose one. Lol

My badge at work is on a lanyard I wear around my neck with a retractable bit that will reach as far as I can extend my arm in any direction.

Salary too but man I’m not taking calls at 8pm or weekends

That’s on call and I better be compensated for it
I was salary at my last gig. Based on 8 hours/day. Work day was 7-4 with a one hour, mandatory, unpaid lunch. We’d get a few bucks an hour for carrying the phone when on call, compensated if we got a call.
They decided to stop paying us for being on call over the lunch hour. All of us started leaving the phone on our desk for that time. Management insisted we needed to carry and answer it even though we were not being compensated in any way for the hour. They lost that battle, and when something went sideways and became a much larger problem because there was no one around to answer call, they started paying us to carry the phone on our lunch hour again.

Expecting someone to answer work calls during non-work hours when they’re not being compensated is asinine. The a**h*** that ran our department drove off a very good, very hardworking, underpaid professional engineer by taking him to task for not answering his phone at quarter to ten on a Friday night. A month later he was making twice as much at a different place. [thumbsup]

Neither is mine. He's 23 and owns his own home already......he saved a ton of money working his butt off with a full time and part time job for a couple years then bought his own house b4 he got married.
One of my daughters was able to buy her home at 25 in Dracut. I told her that she was smart to buy right before prices went full retard, but she's in the Biopharma industry and they throw money at those people.

It's not the generation's fault. It's the parents. I could give 1,000 examples. But I'm getting ready to have breakfast last week. And I watch my nephew get told very clearly "Make a pot of coffee so that your dad can have a cup when he comes down". 15 minutes later dad comes down and there's no coffee. He asks the nephew for a cup. The nephew realizes he put water in, the coffee mix in but didn't hit Start. He comes back and his dad asks him if he made the coffee. His response "It's not ready yet". I respond "The correct answer is 'no'". His mom says "No, he just forgot to hit start" me "No, the correct answer is he didn't make the f***ing coffee".

It seems like a small thing to bitch about, but it's one of 30 things that happen every day. There's zero accountability in households now. "Oh he forgot, oh he's on an IEP, oh he didn't take his meds, oh he has trauma" Oh how about he has no problem waking up at 5am and getting on Rocket League but doesn't do his chores because he's asserting dominance on his cuck parents.

I mean... you realize you sound like a pyscopath right?

People forget to do shit all the time... in your example the kid went through the steps and didn't hit the start button that 1000% better then my parents would've gotten out of me at 15

Lol, it's not that he "forgot". It's that him, his brother, his friends all "forget" to finish all of their tasks. Now go back to the original post. The worker didn't forget. He f***ed up and lost the gate card. But he's obviously grown up in a world where "oh I forgot" is an acceptable excuse to not being responsible. My nephew didn't "forget" to hit start. He was focused on getting back to Rocket League instead of being focused on completing his task and earning the ability to go back to Rocket League.

And this is a common excuse I see from bad parents. "That's more than my parents would've gotten out of me at 15". Yes, we get it. You were a poorly behaved kid with bad parents. If your friend jumps off a bridge would you? That saying used to be answered with "of course I wouldn't jump off the bridge". Now it's answered by the parent going "well, at his age, I totally would've jumped off the bridge".

Plus companies who use these bullshit questionnaires which are supposed to test your personality, knowledge and aptitude, which is being used to create and sell data for researchers (also used by AI); not just to be reviewed by employers looking for the "right fit for the team" if it ever reaches them. There are plenty of lazy ones in each generation yet each generation has a new set of hoops to jump through to get a job, especially if it's their first time.

The jiggler 100% fireable

have to take calls on break or lunch and unless being paid for “on call”my time is my time

Not in a heavy tech world where you’re constantly making changes to large scale operations. Which is what this guy did. Made a major change and left his apartment and left his phone behind. He basically took out all of EMEA and the excuse was he doesn’t answer his phone on purpose? Nope gone. Good luck with that attitude. My guys are salary and heavily compensated. They don’t have a leg to stand on with that attitude.

Or... it's a way to weed out those who lack the dedication and commitment to be successful in a given role. I manage over 30 FTEs and it was almost 50 when I was in Boston. Every tech applicant goes through a phone screen with HR and/or myself, then 1-2 interviews with Supervisors and Educator (only one in-person, as a tour is critical, the 2nd is remote, if necessary), then a final video call interview with me. If all goes well, they get hired. It takes up to a year to become fully trained and competent in my field. We are supportive, empathetic, and adjust our educational approach to ensure the success of each individual. At the same time, we do not have time to proactively monitor trainees who fail to remain engaged in their own education and ask questions in an honest effort to understand, as they would ultimately be setting themselves, our team, and the people we serve up for failure. Can't have that, and a thorough interview process is one tool for weeding them out.

I've never understood the 'unpaid' lunch hour. It's a small compensation to keep morale up. I've never worked someplace that could keep me busy 8 hours a day, and when I was working for the .gov, I ate when I had down time. It's not like you can pull off a pursuit, take your lunch, then jump back into the fray. If anyone got caught not helping because they were eating, they had a much rougher time on the job, no one would help them when they got a fun situation at the end of shift. Then again, I've haven't worked less than 10 hours a day for the last 20 years.

How much are CDL jobs paying these days. Also, how does one get a CDL?
1. Get a job at Amazon.
2. Once hired, apply for CDL school(they pay for it).
3. Get your CDL.
4. Quit the day you get your CDL and get a better gig elsewhere.

There are zero requirements to stay on for any amount of time once it's in your hands.

....the process of getting hired has way too much bullshit in it for young people.
Old farts, too. The problem I see with all this online application bullshit is that employers have to pretend that they're considering every applicant, when they know they don't want anyone over 40. Oops, computer glitch. Oops, we didn't receive a response so we're no longer considering you. Oops, you didn't provide your TEN-digit SSN to accept the position. (AutoZone.)

I've enjoyed seeing a local management position pop up on Indeed regularly. I was rejected for the position a couple years ago because the bimbo interviewing me on the phone "didn't think I'd commit to the job". Hahaha--20 years in the industry, had a company-wide reputation as "The Turnaroundist", ended up owning the largest chain between Seattle and Bozeman by snatching up distressed locations and, uh, turning them around, now retired and looking for a little side action, and shit on by college-educated Babette who has never has her hands dirty. Hahahaha--no sympathy from me for anyone bitching about finding quality people.

Point of order....I drove tractor trailers for a few years.....it was never really stressful for me.......I found driving them quite easy even backing into shit hole loading docks with a 53 footer off main roads......just do the job lol

I got rejected from a job in my 20s …because my answer of personal and Career 5 year plan was be at x level in the company and also hopefully start a family with the chick I was dating.

Told i wasn’t committed enough to the job, not even paying 25$ an hour.

What do you consider to be heavily compensated, $100K, $200K, $300K? People say these things but don't put numbers, or even a range, to put it in true perspective, one man's heavily compensated is another man's shit pay.

Truck driver that works for me. He's 24. He hasn't fueled his reefer trailer and let the tank get low.....because he lost his gate card 3 days ago......and has been waiting to tell me. I know he lost it because he told one of the other drivers he lost it and that driver told me this morning that this kids not fueling the trailers and he's gonna get f***ed and have to fuel them all today before the weekend.

Text chain with said 24 year old....

He had to drop off a loaner tractor Tuesday and left the card in the tractor.....aka.....you f***ing lost it. 🙄
