Harvard Sportsmen's Club

FYI-- There are currently 750 HSC members qualified to shoot high power rifles at the 200–300-yard range. In 2009 there were only 131 HSC members qualified at the 200–300-yard range. Over the interim, including the pandemic, we removed approximately 250 qualified members who, for unknown reasons, did not rejoin HSC and have since been removed from the qualified list. Ergo, 131 plus 619 plus 250 equals 1000 members over time have been qualified at the HSC 200/300-yard range since 1996 when the range was built. Whether qualified members choose to continue to shoot at the 200/300 is a personal choice. If you are thinking about becoming qualified at the HSC high power rifle 200/300 range, check out the HSC Forum or come by and see us. /EDS

I an 200/300 qualified at Harvard, but haven';t recieved a sticker in years or membership card - but I pay the annual dues and have my gate card key. What should I have with me to prove 200 /300 certification? Thanks.

What should I have with me
guts to face ed if he shows up and not aware of you to be certified. :) and a password for the lock. i was barked at couple of times - once you open the gate and drive in - lock the chain back on the lock, so no one can open it if they do not know the combination. and do not forget to put the flag up.

Been so long I forgot the combo, but I know who to ask.

Fairly quiet this morning. Had a great range day at the MG range. Whoever left all the #10 cans made our shotgun shooting a lot more fun. Ended the day filling 2 contractor bags of trash from the MG range - hopefully it looks a bit cleaner for the next group.
Not sure why but the MG range tends to collect a huge amount of crap all piled up.

Simple, get qualified at the 200/300. Paying your dues and having a gate card has nothing to do with shooting at the 200/300. Prove you can qualify to be qualified to the 200/300 committee.
Follow the process. You are one of many who, over the years, have come to us re having been qualified years ago, but do not have a sticker and I have no paperwork in the file. /EDS

I qualified there a while ago and I got a gold sticker for my membership card, do you guys not do that anymore, just keep a list or something?

Are you saying that the club's failure to keep records means that I have to requalify? Not a big deal if that's the case, since range time is always good time. I'll check to see if I have an old card with a sticker on it.

And I did "follow the process". Perhaps I need to follow it again :D

Shooting blanks, sounds kinda boring.

Could have at least thrown a bowling ball in there.

Are cannon balls illegal to shoot or something?
Going back a ways to when I was a kid (around late 60's) I used to go to black powder shoots at Harvard with my Dad where they had all manner of competitive events, including cannons and mortars. I seem to remember the cannons being run mostly by minute man groups and they were bored to shoot steel soda cans filled with cement. Can't recall what the targets were...
The mortars were run by individuals usually from a comfy lawn chair and were made from cut down hydraulic cylinders also with an appropriate bore for cement filled cans. It was fire at will and scoring was a big ring scratched out maybe a 100yds out in the pit with a wood stake in the middle that they'd attempt to hit for the most points. It appeared that only a rounded tablespoon or so of powder was needed to lob the cans out there at a pretty impressive vertical height, seemed to hang in the air for a long time.
I really wanted to build one but my Dad was a bit discouraging about it, lol. He built a 'small' bronze naval style cannon with the barrel about 2'x5" with a 1" bore, used to haul it out on the 4th and make some noise. I found the hunk 'o bronze at the scrap yard, I could barely carry it, as his little lathe at home was too small for the job he had to turn it at work. Was still pushing that lathes capabilities somewhat, remember he burned up the big live center and brought it home to rebuild it.
Fun times...

Yes, you do!

I think a lot of people simply have never qualified for it.
I qualified for it with chetd, was given the sticker for my club ID and code to lock on the gate only to be told later by some other HSC volunteer that I was not properly entered into the system they use to keep track of it.

Never really had the time to sort that one out.

I will be qualifing in March on the 200/300. Been itching to get qualified but never made it a priority. But every time I go to the club I drive by the 200/300 and tell myself I need to get my rifles out on the longer ranges. Mostly my custom built 6.5CM and 300WSM.

It’s not hard. Make sure you can shoot a decent group at the 100 and bring your target showing that group. You will also need to know your comeups for 200 and 300.

As M1911 said, it's pretty easy to qualify. You only need to shoot at 200 to qualify. Once you're qualified, you can shoot at 200 and 300. The calibers allowed all shoot flat enough that if you're on at 200, you'll still hit the steel at 300.

Is there any reason that they do not allow rimfire there?

I seen guys with Thompson Contenders there.
The backstop isn't that high and .22lr has a lot of drop at 200 and 300. I suspect they are worried about people getting their dope wrong and a round exiting the range.
