How tight is 35 ft pounds of torque?

35 ft/lbs of torque is just slightly more than you have it now (but stop when the screw starts spinning freely) [wink]

I have a tourque wrench you can borrow Troy.

Or...just buy one. You can never have too many hand tools. [grin]

1. Clamp it down
2. Place a breaker bar on it.
3. Place a 35' length of pipe over the breaker bar.
4. Make sure the bar is horizontal to the ground
5. Place a 1lb weight on the end of the bar.

You'll be all set[smile]

35ftlbs is equal to applying 35lbs to a 1ft wrench to put it in a simple form. You could also say that 35ftlbs is enough energy to lift a 35lb weight 1ft at sea level.

So in a pinch with out a torque wrench I would find a 1ft wrench measured from the center of the fastener to the point where I attach my fish scale. Pull your fish scale perpendicular to the wrench until it reads 35lbs. You now have applied 35ftlbs to your fastener in a crude way.

I've done this, it works our reasonably well (as long as you keep the fish scale at 90 degrees from the wrench) though we used an 18" wrench cause that's what we had.

If is a barrel nut for an AR, you can hand tighten it, then line up the next gas tube hole, usually the barrel nut specs are from 30-75lbs. Not sure if the your LAR-8 is different

This is an important point. Check your specs but typically 30 or 35 lbs. is the minimum. You turn the nut until you get 30-35 lbs. Then if you're not immediately lined up for the gas tube you turn until it is aligned but do not exceed 75 lbs.

I plan to switch my upper in the near future to an A3 and I'll probably be using my Sears beam wrench. It's not a precision instrument but it should be able to tell me if I'm between 35 and 75 lbs!

Now look what we did!

Anyway, Troy...buy a torque wrench.

Sounds right. When I took the armorer's course from Armalite, we were told the range is 30-80.

Agreed on both counts. Jen, you missed the funniest/most copious part of the night though.

Another good thing to have is a proper torque wrench. Sears sells them too, Troy.

The last time I used a proper torque wrench whilst consuming copious amounts of alcohol, I was working on a 68 Powerwagon, and ended up buying my buddy a new torque wrench. Em thangs ain't posta break...

Don't worry Alex...I'll be there with the sharpie next time. [devil]

If buying a torque wrench is out of the budget, get a sixer of PBR and bring it to the closest auto shop. I'm sure you'll find someone to spend a couple minutes torquing it properly.
this would definitely work at my shop especially since it is a gun :) although ice cold Bud bottles would be much better.... wrong side of Boston though.too bad
