MA Gun Grab 2024: H.4885 - Passed legislature, headed to the governor

So if I've read everything correctly the Senate version as passed is essentially unchanged from the original; no poison pill amendments, no whole-sale neutering of sections; just a half-hearted partial grandfathering of some scary rifles. IMNSHO, given the nature of the reconciliation process, this is the "best" we'll see, it only goes downhill from here.
There is no compromise here. It's like starting with a dogsh!t sandwich from the Senate and a triple-sh!t pizza from the house; we'll end up with a double-sh!t calzone: It's still going to be full of sh!t.

Read what Crackpot posted.

Been texting with Velis this morning to clarify the grandfathering. According to him anything legally owned now, purchased before or after 2016 is grandfathered. This whole mess still has to go to conference committee.
Then they need some new language since the language they have does not do this. Remember, Creem may have many brain cells but none of them communicate with one another. 81 and dementia.

Nice shit-analogy Rick

Sent a email out to Senator Mark also, asking him the same question.
His response:
It is a bit confusing and inside baseball talk. The leadership agreed to a grandfathering clause, unfortunately not amendment 23, but a compromise version, so we could be on record calling for one. But it is different than the House version, which was one of the few things better in the other bill, for bargaining purposes if this goes to conference committee. So in theory, this gets used to keep out something bad from the House version later.

The good news is both chambers are on record in support of grandfathering. Bad news, we’ve got a lot of work to do moving forward. If the versions are too different and no agreement is reached then nothing goes to the Governor at all.

Read this thread or the GOAL summary on their website or the bill itself. Yes, we'll still have private transfers.
Not if the ATF gets their way, and they will. Biden (D, 2020, 81M votes) is moving to require ALL Firearms sales to have background checks in a new rule that is close to being adopted. Just Google it, there were several articles about it just last week. So the days of F2F transactions are coming to an end also. It’s a full court press.

Anyone heard from the NRA on this? Oh that’s right, for the last two decades they’ve just cashed out checks, sent us a $4 nylon bag and squandered tens of millions to enrich themselves. Anyone who remains a member of that organization deserves everything they get.

"Bad news, we’ve got a lot of work to do moving forward." I don't think that phrase means what you think it means.

"If the versions are too different and no agreement is reached then nothing goes to the Governor at all."

Please inform him that’s not what the amendment says.

How about if I bought my pre-ban/pre-1994 weapon yesterday, or I buy one tomorrow, is that still ok, or would I have had to purchase it prior to 2016 for it to be kosher?

Frank
Who knows. Under the current proposal it’s fine. That could change when it’s final and you just wasted $2k panic buying.

The thought that they wont agree on something by 7/31 with Day and Creem on the committee hashing it out is not something I’d bet any money on.

When a new resident moves into the DPRM they are not required to fill out an eFA-10 to register any guns they bring with them, therefore, the grandfathering with the "must be registered before a date 8 years ago" requirement still mandates disgorgement of some people's EBRs.

in an attempt to lighten the mood around here, let's check in with the ri mag ban lawsuit, currently in the first circuit.

now imagine the depth of the problem that the great and general court of massachusetts is trying to hand them.

btw: i found a really good use of giffords, a record of every lawsuit and the status around the country. thanks, gun grabbers!

So what do we think about Tarr voting for this?
We should oppose anyone who voted for it. I don’t care who or what party or if their replacement is “worse” whatever the hell that is anymore. They should be shown the door. If that means things get worse before they get better then so be it.

Read the article. There are a total of four Rs in the Senate and only one of them voted for this.

You have no idea who you're talking to [laugh]
Right, I’m just frustrated at this nonsense and venting. That R pol should be finished in this state. You might as well have a crazed liberal in there if they aren’t going to fight for the constitution and side with every mommy group that call the pol’s office crying about saving children by making legal gun owners suffer. Yes, it would be a losing cause, but at least pretend to put up a fight. I get it, every moderate R in Mass thinks that they have a shot at being governor someday because of Romney and Baker, so they fold on issues that suburban mommies get upset about because Oprah or Taylor told them to get upset.
