The Conference Committee has sent official language out - h.4885

It matters though. I’m semi pant-shitting only because I have to calculate a 7 day delay into the equation if I buy something last minute - which means tomorrow
The background check will go through in seven days at max. If you are cleared on a given day you are cleared for all firearms that day. It doesn't apply to only that one firearm you purchased. Only good for that day I believe though. If you wait past the day of clearance they will do the background check all over again. Don't quote me on this, but i picked up something on the day the background cleared. purchased something else and left because I always get delayed. Shop called me up 30 mins later saying I should turn around and pick up what I purchased because it came back clear. Worth a shot!

Yes, you can add other firearms up until the FFL closes the transaction, usually right after the sale.

I am seeing a lot of interpretations of the bill, but one thing I wanted to verify is, are preban mags going to be illegal now? To own and carry too?

You can possess them if you keep them unloaded and in a locked container unless you are at the range. Any transportation must be unloaded and in a locked container. No carry at all.

You’re right, that was uncalled for.

All I’m trying to say here is that we can either leave in droves and make things worse for people who can’t, or we can stand up for our liberty and freedom and fight this.
Yea....I left with the droves. Enough years as a MA gun owner you learn you get f***ed in the ass little by little each year. Mass is a lost cause. Good luck fighting the fight.

The new law says “legally possessed ON 8/1/2024”, not on or before. So if the signs it with an emergency preamble prior to 8/1, the law takes effect immediately and hence the 8/1 grandfathering will not be triggered. If she signs it without the emergency preamble, or on 8/1 or later,’then the grandfathering is triggered.
But wouldn’t no grandfather period leave it open to lawsuit/injunction?

This. She doesn't have to sign it. It becomes law 10 days after the legislature passed. So, Sunday.
Starting to think this makes most sense, either way she wins. If she doesn't sign the bill and it becomes law it still throws a hand grenade into MA gun ownership. If it then eventually gets overturned in court she can say "Hey, I didn't sign it, it's not my fault".

???

If only there was an organization that could
- periodically inform us in plain language exactly what deadlines are in play and
- what rights are gradually being infringed

There is.

For the eightieth time: the law, as written, defies any attempt to summarize it meaningfully. It says different things in different places, it contradicts itself more than once, and its vagueness exceeds even the usual political standards. GOAL does its best with its summaries, but it can't turn shit into Shinola. The bill is INTENDED to be impossible to explain, follow, or prosecute.

wondering if she’s quietly trying to bury it she did take loss on restrictions With out an emergency preamble regardless of what they wrote as start date it takes 90 days to go into effect

I believe this is her play.

I'm not surprised. I always thought she was canny enough to do something like that. I still don't think she cares all that much about gun control.

Fine. But to work against the threat-via-vagueness, they should just tell us: 'MA is going to restrict your ability to buy an AR. Buy one before 8/1. And these mags, too.'

I mean, to be fair, these are the big-boy pants so many of us are pointing out in the three or four threads that cover this POS bill.

GOAL is one resource. It's not the only one. You can see what people are saying here, or probably on Reddit or Twitter; all of it reflects the ambiguity in the bill. NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING FOR SURE. So? Read the bill yourself, if you're concerned about following it, and you'll probably find that grandfathering ends on 01 August.

The obvious conclusion is that you should buy your shit before 01 August, I would think?

Maybe they don't want to in fear that they will be held liable for misleading people into a possible act that could have legal consequences later on. It plays into the hands of the anti-2A lawbreaking legislature who wants the confusion and fear to sow into the population so they don't buy, whether or not GOAL intends it.

Make your own decisions and be at peace, but don't let the arrogant lawyers and politicians scare you because they don't understand that they have limits on what laws they can make.
