Ultimate SHTF rifle???

* 1-8, surprisingly poor eyebox at 1x, but the eyebox from 2-6x or so is totally fine for magnified shooting positions. 8x eyebox wasn’t as bad as people said. But yeah, the 1x was surprisingly worse than expected. My cheapo 1-6 vortex and primary arms had better 1x eye boxes. And the NX8 has a narrow field of view to boot (though not as tight as the ATACR).

* 4-32, perfectly acceptable eyebox all the way the way through 20x. And then it’s super tight, but no tighter than any other high mag optic.

Edit: If you’re thinking about the NX8, give it a try and see for yourself. It’s definitely worth checking out for yourself rather than taking internet opinions. Because it does have a lot going for it.
I run an offset red dot

I do like AKs, but I also like G3s, AR180s, Daewoos, a FAL or two... even an AR.

I'm an equal-opportunity rifleman. And I'm never all that hung up on 1MOA accuracy. I will say that my Vz58 is noticeably more accurate than any AK I've owned.
There is something liberating about a 3-5 MOA rifles.

I guess SHTF is vastly different if home vs on foot. Good luck carrying 1k rounds on anything outside of .22. Good luck even adding 500 rounds to the weight of a pack
Maybe an AR with a 22 long rifle conversion kit would be the ultimate rifle. Pack? A couple hundred rounds of 556 and a couple bricks of 22 lr

That's actually a great idea. Add a binary trigger and nobody is going to question the skinflint 22LR suppressive fire that you lay down for your teammates. $10 of 22LR and a SBR with a binary trigger is a sh!t ton of fun for short change. On the practical side, 22LR is all you need for most small game.

It alerts everyone that your clip is empty with a very audible PING and yes, it IS a clip in this scenario, grammar nazis.
The only alert you get from an M1A is the operator sweating and panting while fumbling a new mag into the rifle….
Now you can use stripper clips to load the magazine while it’s in the rifle as well but they don’t go “ping” unless you throw them at something
Love my M1A but I get winded carrying it to the truck 🤣

I don’t know if you can pin down a beat all around rifle considering there’s so many SHTF scenarios
As much as I love all my center fire EBRs I keep coming back to the 10/22
I own a few of them
350 rounds can fit in a pocket
BX25 mags exist
You can even put it in a tacticool stock for the intimidation effect

Yes this is coming from the guy who started a thread about how bored he is with .22, it would be less boring anywhere but at a gun range lol

I know you run your shit regularly but what's your process for cleaning that.

After an estimated amount of rounds or whenever needed or never?

Honestly i kinda abuse it, i havent been shooting nearly as much as id like the past year or two but it gets shot regularly in small amounts, 50 rounds here 100 rounds there, then at least once a year ill do a course with it where we shoot roughly 1000-1500 rounds. The past two years, probably like 1500-2000 rounds a year. Its been my main gun since 2018. I haven't changed any parts, its probably due for a new barrel and springs etc here in the next year or so.

Im borderline negligent with cleaning. I strip it and clean it probably 2-3 times a year when i notice its getting real sludgey. I dont carry clean guns. The military ruined me, i saw more guns broken from autistic over cleaning... joes smashing steel cleaning rods into bolt lugs, washing them in sinks, etc so their f***ing gay arms room guy couldnt do the f***ing gay pinky in the chamber test. Machinegun teams f***ing deadlined because some idiot lost a part because some idiot told his guys to go clean their weapons to keep them busy in the field instead of actuallyteaching them shit. I now have a hearty hate for the idea that any gun needs to be cleaned after each use. So i send them all to my gunsmith when i buy them and if he says they need to be cleaned i melt them down into lawn gnomes.

A high quality AR15 really doesnt need constant maintenance, if it feels sluggish i can pull my bolt back and drop some slip2k or whatever on it and it will continue on as needed. I can honestly say ive never had a notable malfunction that couldnt be attributed to ammo or magazines in all that time.

AR15s being unreliable is absolute FUDD lore. Maybe your AR15 you built out of a bunch of parts you ordered and assembled with a pair of channel locks is unreliable. But ive had those too, and they still worked better than any AK, M14, etc ive ever owned, and they were even accurate.

@AllaSnackbah you haven’t had your rifle gum up after running suppressed for those round counts?

Not really, like i said if it slows down or feels icky ill put slip2k in there and fire 10 rounds quick and it blows a ton of the gook out into my face.

I dont even think thats that bad honestly, if i shoot 2k a year even cleaning it twice, thats 1000 rounds per cleaning. If your rifle cant handle shooting 1000 rounds without a detailed cleaning you need to buy a different one.

I love a snackbar, is speaking the gospel, I can’t state enough how many guys I’ve met with super clean weapons. That it failed cause they cleaned it to failure. I never had luck with my A1 or A2 M16. I hardl clean my akms every 2k rounds unless it’s packed with mud.

Do you have an adjustable gas block/is it over-gassed with the can?

I got one for $445 shipped
The $350 I paid was for the WASR, six mags in a nice modern carrier, and 500 rounds.
4. There are better choices available, like the FAL or the G3. A modern PTR91 or C308 gives you a robust, lightweight, reliable battle rifle whose magazines cost about twelve dollars, with spare parts that are cheap and plentiful (though you hardly need any, since the operating system is so simple). In that world, there's zero good argument that ends with an M1A being a superior SHTF platform.
OK. Tell me where exactly you are getting these deals in today's world. Otherwise, you are comparing apples and oranges.

350-445 were the numbers quoted. What better choices can you point to right now? Want to see the "Add to cart" button.

We've been over this. This was years ago

I shop used, mostly. Almost every rifle I own, and ALL of these "deals," came out of the NES classifieds. When I'm in the market, my usual technique is to trawl the Classifieds religiously and make sure I've got cash on hand before I reach out.

The WASR I bought last year. Same with the PTR91, though I think that was a trade? I've owned many FAL/L1A1 rifles over the years, slowly trading up in quality.

"Add to cart" is not how I operate in buying guns, usually.
