What did you do in the reloading room recently?

Just finished 1000 9mm. The turret press started indexing, or not, erractically for the last 100. Never happened before and there was no obvious cause. Troubleshooting will likely have to wait until after Christmas.
Not sure what press u have. I have dillon 650. The indexing of the primer disc is controlled through a spring. That spring needs to be replaced occasionally as it fails to properly set the indexibg arm (?) which messes up the rest if the cycle because primer isn’t inserted and stroke is incomplete

I have a Lee Classic Turret press. Haven't graduated to progressive yet. The Lee has performed flawlessly for about 6 yrs. I usually clean and oil it every so often. I checked the indexing clamp and it looks fine. Further investigation will have to wait.

I thought about that but the devil you know.... plus I can interchange between machines all the parts and spares.
Same-same.

I have one set up for 9mm non-match ammo all the time because that’s what i shoot the most of. I swap toolheads on the other as needed. Right now it’s set up for match 9mm.

I have a large primer feed and i have to swap that when i load 45 which is mildly annoying but i really don’t shoot much 45 now that im not shooting pins in CT. I think Ive got around 2500 rounds on the shelf so it’ll possibly be a couple years before i load it again.

I was looking at the brass from my 62gr that I shot last week, boy those primers are FLAT. I mean flat flat. I may have to rethink my powder charge, or maybe it dropped more than it was supposed to.
But, my carbine cycled really good!

I bet it did !

I'm loading 45acp. I got 2000 fmj bullets and was waiting for primers which showed up a couple of days ago. I'm about half way through. Those who know me know that I'm a fairly good pistol shot but my rifle shooting is right up there with Stevie Wonder. I'm trying to develop a load for an M1A and didn't realize how much of a difference the amount of powder could make.

Got some pulled 55g JSPs from the place selling all those cool blem/pulled things. Did zero load development. Just looked at the load books and picked one that would be quick and easy to load on the 550 with the ball powder I have the most of. Put 50 of these together. I had previously trimmed this lot of Lake City 2011 brass to 1.760" and run it through this Tikka. Just ran it through the tumbler, lubed them, and kind of threw these together.

25.0g H335, CCI #400, 55g JSP seated to the cannelure 2.200".

Put a few fouling shots into a steel target and made sure they were at least going close to point of aim, then ran ten over the chrono. Seemed like it was shooting about a 2" group, but I also haven't touched this rifle in the better part of a year so I probably wasn't doing it justice.

Average 3039, SD 29, high 3079, low 2989, ES 90

Nice day at the range. High 40s and light wind. Had the 100 yard range to myself the whole time I was there. Check out my wicked tactical shooting mat. I think I got it at Christmas Tree Shops. It was 15 degrees last night here so I figured the concrete slab would be pretty chilly.

Was thinking of running a S&W Airweight in the local club's steel match this weekend. Most stages are 5 targets so it might work if I remember to hold the sights on target while pulling the trigger. I don't have any 38 loaded up, but I have some 160g home cast that probably came from an estate sale, and an old pound of made in Sweden W231. I tried a nice light hopefully-won't-flinch load of 3.8g of that with Federal 100 primers, lubed the bullets with a swipe of transmission assembly grease because they aren't lubed, and went to see where they hit compared to where I hold. Put 15 of them together to test. At 30' it held about a 3" group centered about 2" above the front sight, except the time I flinched and sent one 6" low.

But the SD numbers... I wish my rifle rounds were this tight.

663 654 672 642 682
699 651 681 659 650
663 646 659 663 665

Average 662, SD 15, high 699, low 642, ES 57

Well that was a blast. You could have timed me with a sundial, but I think I only had 2 misses. This week we had 12, 5 target stages and 1, 11 target bonus stage. So I got a few reloads in and I used speed strips for those. 3.9 grains of W231 and a 160g LSWC was lighter than I usually load for the 442 but it was plenty to knock down the falling plate rack without having me flinching.

Lot of guys at the match today. Fun bunch. Those of us who reload and are shooting something other than 9mm will keep an eye on where other reloaders' oddball brass is going and pick it up and set it aside for them, when they're focused on shooting. There's always someone to help load mags or speedloaders if you don't have a bunch on hand, plenty of good natured trash talking too.

I loaded a thousand 9mm this morning then went out to run errands. I started cleaning the loaded rounds (about 300 at a time in the tumbler) and I found I had a new jug of walnut media, so I dumped the old stuff in the trash and used the fresh stuff... So shiny , I don't think the photo does justice

Finally got back to the bench. Deprimed and sized 150 pcs .45 and around 100 .357. Put together 100 pcs .357 with 158gr JSP over 11.5 gr 2400. My Marlin loves that combo. Ran a couple batches through wet/pins tumbler - .45’s in one batch, then 300 pcs 9mm + 100 pcs of .357 in a second batch. Hoping to get back to bench tomorrow to put together a couple hundred .45’s

Wow that’s a light load of 2400. But probably relatively soft shooting

Very nice. What do you use for case lube? I’m assuming you lube 9 brass and that’s why you’re tumbling the loaded rounds?

I use a home made alcohol / lanolin mix. It doesn't really need to be cleaned off, but some of the loaded rounds will feel greasy and it only takes 15 minutes in the tumbler to get them clean and looking good.

Somebody will say you don't even need to lube pistol brass when using carbide dies.... I say try it. On a progressive press the lube makes the sizing so much smoother, and I have a better feel for what is happening like successful decapping, or immediately feeling one of those stepped cases . Its one part of the system that makes banging out a quick thousand rounds seem easy.

Agree 100%
I started lubing 9mm brass a couple years ago and I was like wow now I don’t have to destroy my palm and wrist anymore.
I don’t use conventional case lube. I have a ton of Hornady one shot gun cleaner + dry lube so I spritz a little of that. I’m not sure what the difference is between that and the Hornady one shot case lube. It doesn’t leave as thick of a film like one shot case lube which I like. So I don’t need to tumble the cases afterwards.

Did you weigh the bullets? If it's the place I'm thinking of, I believe it was a mix. You might be shooting 50s and 55s, or 55s and 62s.

Thanks for sharing. I'm setting something up for .223 and will be using same powder/primer combo.

I did weigh several of them. I've ordered rifle bullets a couple times from them now, one order was 55g JSPs, another was 64g JSPs. I didn't try ordering any of their mixed weight 223 batches yet because I didn't feel like sorting through them.

I've also ordered 115g FMJ 9mm, 124g HST 9mm, and 148g JHP 357. I've weighed several of each and the only ones I've found some misplaced bullets were the 357s, where I find an occasional 158g JHP.

I hopped over to the "Reloading 223" thread and from that picked up the idea of actually annealing my brass. First post after doing that is this one using Hornady 50g Vmax bullets which I have really good luck with.
