Caliber Discussion: 300 Win Mag vs 300 Win Short Mag

I have the KAK 300 WSM upper on a LR308 lower and it is really only viable if you reload. The issue is that the max OAL of the .300 WSM is 2.860 in while for the .308 it is 2.800 in. You wouldn't think that 0.06 in makes much of a difference, but it does. All the commercial ammo I've used is loaded out to the max OAL and therefore has trouble feeding through most AR10/LR308 mags. The only mag that works even semi-reliably is the ASC Stainless Steel SR-25 AR10 .308. I find it easier to reload it down a bit so the OAL is closer to the .308. Also, the case dimensions of the WSM are such that you can really only load 4 cartridges into the mag if you want to reliably feed that first round. When everything is working right, it is a remarkably powerful and accurate rifle, but it is a bit of a PITA to get everything right.
is it shooting ok for you so far?
i looked at some reddits and it seems the issue there may be with an extractor that is apparently one of a kind with no simple way to source the replacement?
no issues so far with yours, i hope?

I was at a club one day when a guy was shooting a 300 Win Mag. No thank you very much. 💣

What is the benefit of the 35 Whelen? I’ve seen it mention a few times in my research.

based on reading, necked up .30-06 with some serious bojangles. Factory ammo can be had, Hornady Superformance for $1.80 a round ship from our friendly targetsports. Not the round you want past 500 yards, BC is too high, .30 cal projectiles win out at those ranges. But inside of that, it's like 375 H&H's little brother and he's been hitting the gym. If hand loaded, very close to on par to .375 H&H but with much better BC.

Less recoil, less muzzle blast, more efficient/shorter case, ability to load heavier bullets, bigger hole. And it will shoot out as far as most of us have any business shooting at game.

I ran through this decision some time back as well.
When I build/assemble a bolt gun, it's going to be 300 wm. Wsm was appealing but when it comes to availability 300 we is going to win every time.
So far there's only 1 gun that I want that's pre built in the caliber

As this is more or less about long actions vs short actions and as the 35 Whelen has been tossed in, might as well spoil the waters more with it's short action counterpart, the 350 rem mag if you're looking for a more compact rifle. Ammunition is hard to find and in a compact rifle it gets a bit brutal which was one of it's short comings when it was introduced back in the 60's plus it's too short of a barrel didn't let it release it's full potential. The parent cartridge is a 7mm rem mag cut down and mouth expanded.

I wanted a 350 Rem. mag in a Remington 673 when they (673) first came out, never got around to acquiring one.

They came out in 4 catalog chambering's and one special run of about 500 (I think, can't really remember the total) in 243 (non-catalog). They were 6.5 rem mag, 350 rem mag, 308 Winchester and 300 SAUM.

I have the first three:

I didn't really want the 300 SAUM but would have grabbed a 243 if it were available. They pop up from time to time and many are unfired, maybe they were told it would be a collectable or something. Most of my collection is made up of multiples of basically the same firearms with varying calibers. With bolts, I like matching 243's with 308's for short actions and 270's with 30-06 in long as the centers to the line.

My .2cents

I would take a Tikka any day over any browning rifle. Browning QC has gone WAY downhill over the years with lots of concerns over accuracy vs the tikkas that are sub moa out of the box

Go to any store with a good selection of used rifles and tell me how many used tikkas you see on the shelf vs used brownings

With the caliber debate…my thought process has always been “in a pinch can i get this caliber at a mom and pop store in the back country?”

.300 win mag? Almost always yes… 300WSM? Not so much

That being said, either is great for bear/elk at distance…but both are a little overkill for any bear youd be shooting in the North East as far as ranges go.

As far as anyone advocating for 6.5…well, I’d talk to the high majority of outfitters out west that wont let you use a 6.5 because of its ability to wound and not kill game at the distances its advertised for

300 Win Mag is by far more popular and more guns out there in it, and available than 300 Short Mag. I'm thinking by osmosis.....its been out there a long time vs. the short mag.

I see no reason to shoot either unless your talking Large Elk/bear sized game way out there at 400 yards. Even then most shoot 7mm Mag for that out west.

With todays powders like RL 17....a 30-06 can be loaded pushing 300 Win Mag ballistics and speed.
I have a Browning A bolt with boss on it in 300 wsm....love it. Ammo much harder to find in the higher weights and it is pricy if you don't reload. It has good glass on it, and is a great shooter with 180 grain Winchester Slivertips....which are now impossible to find. Recoil is 270ish with the boss system....but again loud.

So far I've no issues with the "enhanced" extractor in the KAK. But admittedly I've fired less than 200 rounds through it.

Do many Outfitters not allow 6.5?

6.5cm is a great round for hunting. It can certainly drop a bear, a deer, or an elk. The issue isn't the round. The issue is the distances people are willing to take a shot at an animal. And shame on guides that don't get their clients close enough to take an ethical shot. Part of guide's job should be to properly assess the abilities of their client.

Thank the "influencers" for making it cool to take a poke at an animal at 600 yards or more. It's sickening. I'm not saying there aren't hunters that can't do it. I'm saying the number of hunters that can are very limited.

but because of 'reasons' the whole caliber now needs to be banned? fascinating logic.
let`s better ban all hunters altogether, as some of them can indeed be stupid or/and irresponsible. play safe! and do not forget to wear eye protection, to preserve the animals.

Ya, I'm not sure there is any truth to that round or any round being banned. If you are not going to allow 6.5cm then is 243 also of the table? Countless number of deer and even elk have been dropped with the 243. I've never heard anyone bitch about the 243.

i hunted in this country only 2 times while in MO, and both times it was, woe me, a pitiful .223 from an, guess, an AR15. and it worked.
