Good basic AR stock? B5 or CTR which would you pick?

Help my buddy decide on an adjustable stock for his new AR15 build - narrowed it down to a B5 or a CTR. I prefer fixed stocks myself because I run a magnifier + dot combo and like that exact position to get the eyebox I'm used to. Those of you who run adjustable, what do you recommend as a solid value stock? Thanks

I'm a recent convert this year and like the B5. [thumbsup]

All my [installed] stocks are from Magpul. I also have the thicker pads installed on them. I think I have a stock that I originally installed on a build, but removed it and went to a Magpul. IIRC, it was a pretty cheap one from the maker, which is why it got replaced.

Personally, there are enough options from Magpul to satisfy pretty much anyone. I hear that B5 makes some good stuff, but I don't recall ever seeing one of their stocks, or fondling one.

Lol they're not the same. Both are decent.

Maybe your buddy should pick his own stock.

He's got the wiggle on the MOE that came with his new PSA driving him nuts. Fixed would solve that but not having an adjustable feels too ban state cucked for him. Has to be adjustable.

The CTR is solid when the lock is engaged. I have like a half dozen of them or their variants. (ACS, etc)

You’ll have to be more specific on the B5 stock… Car15, bravo or sopmod? Your friend should be deciding what fits their face better.

And all adjustable stocks have at least a slight wiggle to them otherwise they’d be difficult to actually adjust.

The ability to have the exact same position to get the eye box you are used to with a magnified optic changes based on shooting position. That is one of the reasons to use an adjustable stock vs. a fixed stock. In order to maintain the same eye relief, you’ll generally find yourself wanting a longer stock in the prone position than you do standing up.

Once I lose enough weight to do a barrel roll, I might want to upgrade as my skills improve lol.

B5 bravo between the two if your friend isn’t going to try them first. Slightly wider on top for cheek weld but not enough to hate it for being too much/little.

Downside to both is no storage space for candy.

Is it too wide for over ear pros tho?

Honestly the wide vs. narrow stock is going to be personal preference that’s kind of based on your face shape. Some people love the wider stock, and some people feel that it annoyingly causes them to not get their face as close to the centerline of the rifle/optic. I don’t think one design is universally better than the other.

Nothing should be too wide for earpro. I mostly use ones like vltor emod and magpul str with a wider cheekweld and a bit of weight for balance. Magpul ctr goes on lighter builds or folders to lay flatter.

I love the looks of the Daniel Defense buttstock. Whatever my next project is will get one.

I have a PRS on one of my ARs, and an ACS-L on a carbine. Both great options.
I don’t know why but that’s absolutely hideous to me. I’m sure it’s a great stock, but I could never put one on a rifle just because of how it looks. Maybe that’s dumb. But I’ve always thought that it was such a let down that a company that makes that high quality products would put something so unsightly on their lowers. I’m sure others love the looks.

That is 100% subjective and doesn’t make a difference at all in how good of a product it is. I just wonder if I’m the only one that thinks it’s a complete abortion lookswise. I think it makes their rifles look cheesy, even though they are clearly top of the line.

All my Magpul stocks, which have the 'lock level' are wiggle free when it's engaged. From what I recall, the new Magpul stocks get the same effect without the additional lever. Only a couple of options (one or two IIRC) like that so far. But I expect more models to shift over to that mechanism as time moves forward.

The DD stock looks cool, but if you have a lean build, the buttpad is not very comfortable against the body. It’s made for body armor, fat people, or people with muscular pecs.

I haven't used one, or tbh even seen one in person. I just sort of like the skeletonized lightweight look to it, and the textured part has a distinctive look that I haven't seen on other AR furniture.

As mentioned, the ACS-L works great. lightweight, collapsible, has storage and multiple sling mount options.

MBA3 > B5 > CTR

I used to use LMT/B5 sopmods on everything and then went back to the tried and true CTR.

The #1 reason is because of the enclosed latch on the stock, if you shoot off rear bags often, especially with big bore gassers like an SR25, youll quickly find that the open latch on b5 stocks will get depressed by the bag, this will send the occular lens of your glass into your face at the force of recoil and ruin your shot, so, not great.

The CTR is also lighter and works with some of the aftermarket things i like like the Arisaka angle adapter and Larue RISR.
