i love the springfields. TRP full rail. good times.

I'll play. I have a number of 1911s but this is one of my favorites (and my off duty gun) - it is a Clark Customs "Meltdown" Colt 1991A1 Compact. It was in dire need of refinishing so I decided to go all out. I had the rollmarks removed from the slide, the front strap hand checkered, S&A checkered MSH fitted, 11deg muzzle crown and the barrel polished, sights bead blasted and a brass insert in front sight, and the whole gun bright polished and blued. The stag grips finished it off.

Wow, that is an amazing finish. Where did you get that done?? I have seen blued before, but that is maybe the best looking polished blue job I have ever seen.

Damn. That is one beautiful 1911. The melt job is awesome. And there's nothing classier than a nice blued gun. If it were my gun I would have finished it in melonite... but only because I can make a blued/carbon steel gun rust just by looking at it.

Sweet sweet gun.

Thanks for the compliments. The refinishing work was done by a young gunsmith named Robin Dietrich. He and his father run Dietrich Gunsmithy in Otis, ME. They've worked on a number of guns for me, when I left the Meltdown with them I told Robin that I expected to be wowed. He really stepped up to the plate and knocked this one out of the park, he turned it into one of the best looking guns I've ever seen.

That is just beautiful but if you do not mind me asking how much does he charge for blueing.

To be honest I don't know how much they charge for blueing, they just told me a total, I didn't get a break down of the cost for each thing he did. The total for the work done was $464.50 and I purchased the MSH and had Brownell's ship if directly to the shop. If you give them a call either Robin or his dad, Wayne, will be able to give you any info you need. They're great people to deal with and good friends of mine, tell them you saw Scott's Meltdown when you call. www.dietrichgunsmithy.com

That gun is movie-star gorgeous... How do you possibly walk around not constantly wanting to take it out and show people?! [laugh]

I still can't get over how bright & shiny that bluing is on that 1911. I love that meltdown as well. I have never seen anything like that before. What are the main reasons for doing something like that? Just looks?
Again, beautiful gun. I may start bluing everything I own in that same finish! [laugh]
I have a gun I might want re-blued, and it looks like I may be giving them a call.

How do you think that finish will hold up? To fingerprints, etc?? I bet it must be hard to keep clean.

The "Meltdown" was originally offered by Clark's Custom Guns in '96 (mine was built in '98), the idea being that it would be a completely snag free concealed carry piece. In addition to the melt the package includes reliability work, an action job, and more. My gun is 100% reliable and very accurate.http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/meltdown.htm

I've only had it back from being refinished for a few days so I really don't know how labor intensive it will be to care for. I have bright polished stainless guns and use Flitz cleaner and wax to care for them, should work equally as well on a blued gun. Also, the hard work on the gun is done so, even though blueing wear is inevitable, touching up the polish and reblueing it would be a relatively simple task (compared to this first time) should I want to have that done.
