What did you do in the reloading room recently?

i have a stupid question. :)
is there any powder at all that can work for both .223 and 9mm luger reloads?

i finally gave up and ordered 9mm dies, probably gonna stock a little bit of a unique or power pistol to begin with, but would like to fully investigate if i can consolidate this too.
if there is one, it wont be good at either

Any powder you find will most likely be short on gas volume to cycle a AR.

Some of the slowest pistol powders can be used in reduced loads but the pressure peaks in “pistol” powders can be quite high.

Got my current dose of reality in the PRM at the LGS. Was looking to get into shot shell reloading and looking for components.

No powder, hulls or shot so I just picked up some Winchester W209 primers. Got asked for LTC as usual but then came out the clipboard for the new out yourself list buying ammo/components recording your name, license, serial number, item, and perp signature.

I have some Unique powder to start and plan on picking up the Lee Load All for 12guage.

Any recommendations on which hulls, shot, and wads to look for. Planning on doing 2-3/4 and 3” Target loads to start. Which shot shell loading manual is the better one and any good video tutorials? Was watching one and the guy was using steel BBs not lead.

shot shell loading is much different than pistol / rifle in that you pretty much just follow the recipe. You must match the hulls, wads and shot weight/ volume along with the powder type and charge. You will need to know your ingredient list before you go shopping. I don't remember what book I had, pretty sure I let someone borrow it and never saw it again, but it had lots of great beginner info on the loading process as well as extensive data

Very few gun shops have ever been well sticked on reloading supplies.
Dont wate time with 3” shells for target loads.
Hulls I go get hulls from trap range. I grab remingron gun clubs for 2-3/4 target loads.

Have not see. A gun shop in MA with lead shot in stock.
Good luck
I went to Als in derry and collectors coin in CT for bulk shotgun reloading supplies

Went from a SMK 80g. .224 to a Berger 80.5g in my AR and neglected to remeasure the Berger for ogive setting. Seeing how the Bergers are a tad longer with more bearing surface, i ended up jamming the lands to the tune of .036-.042.....LUCKILY the only thing ruined was 30 pieces of brass and my ego. Blew two primers right out of the cases. (didnt realize this till i picked up all the brass). Forgot to say i load the SMK's .010 off the lands. So when i tried seating the bergers .010 off lands using the same OAL, things didnt work right. Fastest one ran 2898.6 fps. but they were all over the target. Now i know why... Learned a valuable lesson this outing......

+1 on dumpster diving for Rem gun club hulls. This online place is like Walmart for shotshell components...but no shipping to MA if u can belive that - Shotshell reloading supplies, components, & accessories: Ballistic Products

...come to think of it, I belive Mac hooked me up with some hulls when I first started.

R u hand loading them? It is quite a bothersome thing to do….
Plus I think it is not too great for an extractor to slam at the round that is already in the chamber?

Lyman Shotshell Handbook 5th Edition is a good start for new reloaders.

Also, the MEC JR 600 is a quality single stage reloader.

Got the Lyman this weekend.
It’s ridiculous Midway etc wanted $13 to ship a book.

I plan on picking up the Lee Load All for $75 or so. Too bad Brownells was out of 12 gauge with the free ship they just ran.

I was just at DL a couple hours ago. Some powder ( cfe223, h335, and a few others) , plenty of primers , and an 8lb jug of BULLSEYE if anyone is looking . Not much for bullets .

I cant report on Heritage as they were closed by the time I made my way over there .

Sakkonet in Tiverton has some powders too .

ARs are “hard” on extractors single fed or mag fed. A good extractor should last a long time. Thousands of service rifle shooters have been single loading and slamming the bolt home for decades.
I have replaced barrels before extractors, lol

If you plan on loading for a little while you might consider finding a mec 600 jr. Nothing wrong with the Lee but the mec is a little more robust and you can probably find one used for a good price.

Yep, tough to beat used Mec 600...design hasn't changed in many years so older one is just as good.

So what do you do with rifle brass trim every case or measure and trim what needs to be trimmed i did 300 223 about a 1/3 was long
For small batches I will zero my dial caliper at the trim length and makes for quick sorting. If I have a large batch I find it just easy to just toss each one in the trimmer.

I either do 100 or less or torture myself and do a few thousand
