Emergency Preamble to be signed Weds?

The real life sad thing here is that I was talking with a couple of Cape Cod Gun Work employees at the store a couple weeks ago. They were stating that with the perceived loss of revenue for the store the owners are not sure they'll be able to keep the store open. That would be a real shame as they are basically one of the very few Gun Stores on the Cape.

Then again, I'm betting many gun stores in MA are in the same boat.
Seems like that was the govs goal. Dont have to ban guns if noone can buy them anyway

The lawmakers: Thats a feature, not a flaw.

Cape Gun Works is a pretty risk adverse store aren’t they? Kinda like Four Seasons? I don’t think they sold lowers or did frame transfers so they will probably limit themselves to on roster handguns exclusively. Most of the smaller stores will probably use that guidance yesterday and sell long guns. OR they will all risk it to stay in business.

next will be a draconian taxation on all who will will show up in the gun registry.
a $1k annual tax per each gun will do it for most.

I wouldn't doubt that a "Gun Tax" has already been discussed. Doubt though it'll be $1k per gun. They'll set some kind of "reasonable" value per thousand dollars of value. The same as they do with Excise Tax. They'll get slapped hard if they make it too expensive for low income families to own a gun. This will seriously hurt collectors and hoarders, who they want to come after all along.

Isn't one of the fun parts of the fa-10 system is your "inventory" is any firearm you have owned and never gets reduced because you no longer own something?

If you have something that is now an AW, but was not previously and you question the legality of it, would being forced to register it violate your 5th amendment right?
There are thousands of guns still listed in the system under my name that I no longer have.

If the eFA-10 system is no longer valid, I'm sure FRB will block access to that webpage. I'm positive this will not happen until a new system goes live, whatever year that happens.

Lots more memos, many in direct violation of the law that was passed.
I'm sure they're planning to update the existing portal with stuff that nominally meets muster, but like the "inheritance" link, they won't care when they learn it's wrong. It's the lowest barrier to completion on an unfunded mandate.

Funny as heck, and...

@Cape Gun Works was pretty loud about "this will put us out of business [...] will not comply."

Unfortunately, quiet noncompliance can't work at this point. We have to demonstrate that it won't stand. We don't get standing otherwise.

I'm pretty surprised by that. It's a big store and there is a range and classroom in addition to the actual store section. Seems like the income stream should be somewhat diverse and resilient. It would be a major loss if they close.

Just was in Cabelas (wife likes to shop there for stuff) and I decided to grab a box of 9mm carry ammo. ALL the ammo is now under lock and key (apparently it was getting stolen) and to buy it is a process now. They have a form they came up with where they log your LTC number and you have to pay at the gun counter. Long gun sales appear to be business as usual minus the M1As they used to sell and the SKS rifles that were in the gun library.

I do not buy ammo at that store but I did notice they added the glass
I assume it was in preparation of the law so they put glass with locks on the ammo cabinets
They would leave them all the way open, with the key in the open lock, so I do not think it was because of theft

Big combo gun dealers (i.e., store+range+classrooms) mean big mortgages, big payrolls and big tax bills. One of his revenue streams has now been cut back to practically nothing. I think it's going to be a long time before sales of "Maura-approved" handguns and the most boring snoozer long guns start to pay the bills. And ammo? Who the heck wants to buy "sign here" ammo? :(

It has been said that you can make a small fortune in the gun store/range business if you start with a large one. I know two people who tried - one in VA and one in CA. I don't know the defailt of why they closed, but they both got out of the business.

Cape Gun works is BIG. My first visit was when it was just empty space with the remnants of an indoor skateboard park when it was in the planning stage. Their business relies on three things: Merchandise sales; training; and range fees. This is not an easy business to break even in, much less rake in a profit. I'd guess that Four Seasons does a much higher absolute volume in sales, and the ratio is probably astronomical when you use the retail metric of "dollars per square foot". The fact that CGW is succeeding is a tribute to the competence of the principals.

And I agree - major loss if they close. They are not only a decent shop, but great people as well.

The right lawyer might make that work.

Reminds me of a joke @swatgig once told me:

Q. What do you call 1,000 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean?
A. A good start.

The thought process came from Haynes v. United States. Not the exact scenario but:
"
In a 7-1 decision, the Court ruled in 1968 in favor of Haynes. Earl Warren dissented in a one sentence opinion and Thurgood Marshall did not participate in the ruling.

As with many other 5th amendment cases, felons and others prohibited from possessing firearms could not be compelled to incriminate themselves through registration.[3][4] The National Firearms Act was amended after Haynes to make it apply only to those who could lawfully possess a firearm."

What if Maura is just sending a secret message to us. "Buy more guns now, unpin and all that". We are the illuminati, knowledge is power. Those who see the light shall be saved. What if this is a blessing in disguise?

She sold a shitload. But she’s playing the long game.

There’s definitely some benefits to this new law for a certain group of us. For others it’s a blatant f*** you.

Four Seasons is part of a buyers consortium that gets very aggressive deals. There is also an exclusivity component to prevent competition in the area.
