New Acquisitions for October 2010

My new addition for Oct.

now this is just silly,,,,,,gun pic please

I inherited a few guns from my grandfather the other day. He's had them forever and wanted them out of the house. This is the only one of value:

IMG00303.jpg

1953 vintage Winchester Model 61 in fair shape for its age.

Also acquired was a single shot break action 12 gauge Iver Johnson Champion and a single shot bolt action Springfield Arms Co 22 rifle.
Both of the 22's are still dead nuts accurate to boot! I don't dare put anything through the 12 ga unless I borrow some of EC's mason string [laugh]

Now a question for those more in the know than I am:
I understand the Model 61 is worth some pretty decent money given it's just a pump 22... Would having the gun restored add or detract from the value? A bazillion of them were made, so it isn't like these are rare. I will never sell it, but I don't want to detract from the value either. Advice? If I could have it restored all nice-nice and have the value stay the same or increase, I'd love to do it.

Clean the wood up: Murphys oil soap/water + toothbrush, repeat until squeaky clean. If there's no poly/varnish protection then apply lemon oil or tung oil for a few coats and let soak. Thin out some spar varnish fo rfinal protection or just reapply the lemon/tung as needed - once a year or so.

Leave the metal alone...

My .02

Very few gun pictures on 7 pages of a New Acquisitions thread. [sad]

You asked for it: Some are technically September acquisitions but I've got a hold of my cam only today. Some are projects to work on, most of the parts required are on order.

M1D Garand, serial puts it into Feb 1944. It has obviously undergone an overhaul in 1952 and has been shipped to Denmark later. The flash hider was removed and the bayo lug ground off when it came to germany in 1988.

Here is a couple of mine - a new 229 that I am enjoying quite a bit [excuse the fingerprints, just back from the range] and a used target bow that I had re-stringed and adjusted (haven't done archery before - but happy that I can hit the target - different than shooting bullets - you actually have to go retrieve your arrow!)

Great deal, great trigger, needs some additional clean up but a nice addition to my collection. (It certainly is different)

You're killin' me.... I've been pining for one of those. I'd like to hear how it goes.
I put almost a full Federal 550 pack through it yesterday and it ran very well. Unfortunately I didnt remember to bring the allen wrench needed to adjust the windage with me, so it i didn't get to finish sighting it in completely.
Did you get it at Zero Hour? I saw one in there one day, didn't buy it, and now im kicking myself
No I didn't. Its a very cool gun but the magazines are expensive! Luckily i got this with a brand new second mag included.

Here's my contribution to October's buys....

I couldn't resist this. It's a Ruger New Vaquero in 45LC/45ACP. A Davidson's exclusive with the extra cylinder and recontured hammer.

I really didn't need to get it but....
IMG_6738.jpg

Here it is with it's older brother. A 1994 Old Model Vaquero in 44 Magnum both with 5.5" barrels.

It's funny, they made subtle changes between the old and the new. Most notably the weight. The 44 feels significantly heavier. The cylinder pin in the new model isn't captive anymore (more like a SSA). Those grips on the 45 aren't staying... I'm going to get another set of faux ivories or maybe a nice set of faux pearls.
