Vehicle Undercoating

Yup, it's in a heated garage. This one only has 23K on it, has never seen mud or salt and been garaged pretty much it's whole life. Not only will it not be driven in the winter, it will never even see rain unless some freak shower while we are out (it will likely not have the top on it at all).
Watch out for the top, the side trim will not hold the weight and will distort , and 3 would be the minimum to pick it up

So went in for my annual NHOU at Rhino Linings of Cape Cod. I cancelled the first appointment because of rain; interestingly enough they told me it can be applied when wet because “the oil displaces the water”. Keep in mind this is completely contrary to what they’ve told me in the past and I personally chaulked up to them not wanting to lose business due to rainy day cancellations.

Anyway, here’s a couple of pics of the clear application. I definitely feel like it’s worth doing and will extend the life of a new vehicle, especially a body on frame like pos jeeps. I would not apply it to a wet surface, no matter how much they assure you that you can.

Had the wheels off the Jeep to do a rotation and oil change today and figured I’d take some pics of the NH Oil undercoat after a couple of months.

I like that’s it’s a little thinner than some other brands. Apparently the clear (pictured) is not as durable as black, they also have a thicker “upgraded” application.

Do I think this application annually will reduce rust and allow for easier hardware and parts removal down the road? Yes. Would I recommend it to someone that wants a thick, lasting, undercoat? Eeeehhhhhh

Perfect time for this thread as I'm looking for a new truck. The current condition of my trucks underbody is looking pretty nasty so I'd love to use something on the new truck to keep that from happening.

Is there a place in Southcoast MA or RI that does NH Oil undercoat? I’ve had mixed results with Cape Cod Rino Linings, looking for a different place to do a 2023 Tacoma
Maybe try New England Rust in E. Bridgwater?
I have no experience with them.

Just called and made an appointment. Thanks.

Sounds like it’s owner-operator, which is generally a better outcome

I have no idea , 2 shops closer to me in hanover stopped doing it.
I hope they do well by you.
I have a old tundra I have been trying to buy some time with but never get around to doing it myself.
The spray gun I bought last year had a major malfunction and I dumped 90% of the product I had

I talked to (I think) the owner, Steve, and he said he’s a “one man operation” with a couple of guys that do welding work. He is the one that does the application.

Will report back.

Coming from the POV of an auto mechanic/tech I wondered how happy you are when you have to work on one of these vehicles deliberately covered with oil all over the undercarriage

The coatings definitely make things more difficult to work on, you can't lean on or touch anything, it will be in your hair, everywhere. We do a lot of frame rust repair and it will add a lot of time because it has to get cleaned off prior to any metal work. BUT the oil/wax coatings are the best protection (aside from keeping the vehicle out of the salt/sand) against new england winters especially if the frame already has rust.

I agree on the oil coatings but the wax coating is much less messy. I was concerned about the oil contaminating grass/brush when off-road but the wax dries hard.

Gang,

We are buying a new car for my wife. Any of you have experience with the wax/oil treatment for new cars at NHOU? Cost and effectiveness?

Thanks!
Nh oil sucks. Avoid it like the plague.
Had it done on my pickup and it has been creaking since the place handed me the keys when they were finished. It has been nine months and it never changed in all that time.
Had my car done in Sutton with waxoyl. Nothing better.

you might worry more about all the copper dust your Brakes are tossing out all over the place not just off Roading.
Not only copper, but God only knows what else is in the brake pads lol

I can't even take the spare out without getting Woolwax on me. LOL.

But whatever, I will take that over having to deal with rust and bolts rusting.

When I brought my Jeep into the dealer for new shocks, struts, and damper (covered under warranty) they said next time they were going to surcharge me because of how messy the NH Oil is.

They’ve obviously never had to do a repair involving rusty parts.

F*ck dealers.

undercoatings are not that big of a deal when they have lifts and all the proper tools.

I get it on myself becuase I don't have a lift. Next weekend I will replace the differential cover, which means I will get dirty crawling under the truck. If I had a lift it would be very easy. Only my gloves would get dirty.

I don’t think they’re a big deal with or without a lift. When did mechanics become so afraid of getting dirty?

I’ve owned old Fords and Jeeps most of my life, and that means becoming comfortable with heating torches and grinders for what should be the simplest of repairs. I’ll take the undercoat, thanks.

99% of dealers are not working on anything much older than 5-6 years and some just wont even bother after 8
We cringe here in the north east at 10 years.
Heres a lovely 2008 I looked at today

Anything that sucks time your not getting paid for is a pita. What could be a easy quick job for flat rate turns into a BS job
I personally dont give a shit
Anything 8 plus years old im already geared up and planning the torch and hammer time lol

Pretty soon that jeep dealer will start charging all those lesbians who are lining their interior with stupid rubber ducks to move them to run a diagnostic check from the obdII port under the dash.
